He's already been thoroughly demonized in the media (that in itself isn't reason enough to step down), but the accidental shooting has made him a laughing stock to many voters... He's always being portrayed as mean to begin with, this solidified the hate, not just on the left, and the media (redundant?), but also a good chunk of the middle.
I, for one, really hopes he steps down soon. He was already gun-shy about appearing and becoming visible the last couple of years, partly because of the association with Haliburton... now, I have to admit, he's become a liability to the GOP.
I know I'll be blasted for this by my fellow FReepers, but too many of you always have your rose-colored glasses on. I'm trying to be pragmatic. Flame away, I've got my hat on.
The only liability to Cheney is the target the libs have painted on his back. They painted it there because they fear him. He's the boogey man.
The press and the Dems target him because he is an asset. They now smell blood, and the scent is driving them nuts.
Lots of mixed metaphors there, but you should get my point.
The Republicans in Congress..that are up for reelection don't need Cheney to blame any losses on...they are doing a "good" enough job at screwing things up themselves..
NOW..would not be a good time to replace Cheney...we are at a crossroads with Iran...and Cheney is someone that Bush trusts...
IF...he were to step down for "political" reasons...it could HURT, more than help right now. Maybe after the 2006, elections..or we have a more stable Iran situation...but, Bush will NEVER let him leave for THIS reason...
Not worth a response.
