Mr. Bennett conveyed that there had been an oversight when homeschoolers were excluded from "Oprah's National High School Essay Contest," but that it was too late to amend the rules to include homeschoolers.

Uptoolate says it was an oversight that he excludes Oprah from his T.V. watching and it is too late to amend that habit.

People like Oprah, when they need to change the rules, they open the rule book, carefully tear out the offending page, and voila, the rules are changed.
Too late to amend the rules? Come now Oprah. You can lie better than that.

Too late. Right.....sarcasm. You can bet if it fit correctly into their agenda; they would change the rules.

As usual, they are copping out.

HSLDA congratulates Oprah Winfrey for acknowledging that homeschooling is a viable educational alternative and entitled to equal treatment.

You're too kind. Homeschoolers weren't included because Oprah and her leftist comrades were scared to death that a homeschooler would make monkeys out of the public school entrants in her little essay contest. She couldn't risk having that happen in front of millions of drooling idiots that make up her fan base.

Oprah sold him horse poop and he bought it.

She snowed the cattle ranchers and she just snowed the homeschoolers.

so much for homeschooling.

That's like saying

"Segregation was a simple oversight, but it's too late to do anything about it."

I'm disappointed she caved. I would have grudging respect for her had she stuck to her guns.
The "oversight" excuse 14 days later, is too late.
If you are going to cave, cave immediately.

Yesterday, HSLDA received a written reply from Harpo Productions, Inc. which recognized that "...homeschooling is an important contributor to the educational success of this country."

Sure, so important that they never even considered them for the contest.

The solution is simple. She must either rename her contest, or allow a real "National High School Essay Contest" - it either is a contest, or not a contest. Under her rules, the title is incorrect.

She tested a subset of national High School students.

She is a joke.

For all that I homeschooled and support homeschooling; somehow I've had more than a little trouble caring about her not including homeschoolers. I just don't know why it bothered some so much. I don't expect any different from the world.

They are just being excluded because they are black homeschoolers.

personally, i thought it was silly for the HSLDA to beg Oprah on behalf of homeschoolers... but someone told me that one of the reasons some were upset is that it involves the chance for students to win money... (for college, i guess)... this homeschooler says, "kiss off."

Oprah's having a contest? Oh wait, I knew that, but well, I'm not part of her viewing audience.

Fact of the matter is, I could care less, but if she is touting equal opportunity (and she does do that loudly at times), then she is off her rocker cuz she IS excluding qualified particpants. 'nuff said.

Bah, I have cousins in public high school who could care less as well (one of them a National Merit Scholar!). Guess what, they don't watch Oprah either.

IMO, it's not like it's the National Spelling Bee, the National Geography Bee, or the Intel Science Fair. Oprah? Gimme a break. I don't think the money is worth having homeschoolers associated with the likes of her. I can't believe the money was an issue. My sentiments exactly. There's other options.

I've always excluded Oprah from my tv watching.

They knew the homeschoolers would be too much competition for the gov't school kids. LOL
