Fleischer, who was Bush's first press secretary - from 2001 to 2003 - told E&P that Cheney's accidental shooting of Texas attorney Harry Whittington on Saturday during a hunting trip should not have taken nearly a day to be reported.
"It would have been better if the vice president and/or his staff had come out last Saturday night or first thing Sunday morning and announced it," he said during a phone interview Tuesday. "It could have and should have been handled differently."
But Fleischer also took a jab at the reporting frenzy surrounding the story, saying most Americans are not as focused on it as the White House press corps. "The press is largely right on the issue--but it can be right and go too far," he added.
He also said that if he were still in the White House, he would urge the vice president's office to take some of the heat off Bush's staff: "I think you go to the vice president and say, 'you need to be handling this.'"
Fleischer's comments came just hours after Marlin Fitzwater, who served as press secretary to Bush's father and Ronald Reagan, also criticized Cheney, telling E&P he was "appalled" at the response to the incident.

I read your response: I went to the web site; there are NO links to ANY PDFs there.
It's called basic FRettiquitte - you do not reveal the contents of freepmails on the open forum if they are sent in good faith - in other words, I did not send the freepmail to circumvent forum guidelines about profanity or personal attacks, therefore she should not have posted the contents on the open forum without clearing such with me first.
Do not post private information. Do not post private mail. Do get a life.
Jim
That is a good question we might all ask ourselves; what is Ari getting out of this?
I did not post private information; I did quote on claim he made about Cheney and asked him to provide the proof.
No, it's not. This is a common tactic that I've had used on me before. Why did you send Howlin the Freep mail in the first place, dirtboy?
I gave the link, Howlin.
When you couldn't find it, I gave more detail. And in post #331, I stated the exact finding from the .pdf.
Get a grip. You were wrong. And I will never send you a freepmail again. You violated basic forum etiquitte, and now you are rationalizing violating such like you rationalize all your other personal attacks on this forum.
This is false.
You did not.
Give us a http://thisismyproof.com
Why not just say "It's posted on www.freerepublic.com?"
Dirtboy, you should post those safety violations if that's what you claim. It would be improper "FRettiquitte" not to do so.
Courtsey to work out differences behind the scenes. I used to respect Howlin and wished to work out our differences privately. She violated that.
I was having fun with this whole thing yesterday, but it's not funny anymore.
This was not handled well by the White House.
It was a stupid political blunder NOT to notify the press, it's not like they weren't going to find out sooner or later. There are people on the payroll at the White House who are supposed to make sure these kinds of political blunders do not happen.
This is not funny anymore.
This was a real blunder.
If they had wanted to cover it up they would have rolled Whittington up into a rug, flown him to the Washington, DC area, put a shotgun in his hand, and dumped him in Fort Marcy Park.
You haven't even read the .pdf. I typed it verbatim.
I did in post #331.
What differences? False information. That's no answer.
WHY DID YOU USE FREEP MAIL?
Prepare to be attacked for the crime of stating the obivious.
To: Howlin
You said that the Texas investigators had found that Cheney violated firearms safety rules.
Like I said, Howlin, the Corpus Christi Caller has the .pdf for the investigations on its website. www.caller.com. Their analysis was "victim was covered by shooter who was swinging on game."
It's not a crime, but it indicates carelessness on the part of Cheney.

Where? What safety rule?
Refer to post #383. And back off. I sent the freepmail in good faith and within forum guidelines.
