"The rifles cost slightly over $388 per weapon" - boy, are they price-gouging! In good old days the production costs for an AK47 paint sprayer used to be something like $7, maybe 10. Delivery charges extra.

I not only remember how well the Republican Guard did, I remember how well the Argentine Army under their tinpot dictator did against the British in the Falklands. These rifles will get the same use as French rifles in WWII : "Used for parades, dropped once."

The Chavez government’s shopping list for 2006 includes MiG-29 Fulcrums, possibly Sukhoi SU-27 Flankers...

Raptor food.

Chavez also bought 100,000 AK-103 and AK-104 assault rifles that will be delivered in 2006.

Ouch! The Russians haven't been able to afford these even for themselves.

The AK-100 series is undoubtedly the most advanced assault rifle on the planet.

Actually, the Russians have been making and using the AK-74M, which is exactly the same internally and externally as the AK-100 series, but takes 5.45x39 ammo. The AK-100's are directly based off of AK-74M.

The Russians are thinking about going over to the AEK-971 and AN-94 systems soon

My mistake. I thought the 100s were the ones with the reciprocating barrels.

And, Russia has the money and ambition now to get new equipment for it's military forces, which it wants to enlarge (at least on a reserve basis)

..phonetically speaking, that's "Saouff" of the border, tank chu's bery mas.
Aside from throwing garbage at Dick Nix back in '58, Venezuela was a model for SA... prior to Hugo that is.
Now he's become the regional AK "candy-man" if not beyond.
Straight up, Old Hugo's "Bolivarian Revolution" has betrayed the people of Venezuela not to mention The Liberator. And regionally, Fidelito plays him like a fiddle if not a fool.
Much as our Democrat's cultivated a following that acquired a "jones" for the free ride, Hugo has consciously developed a following. BIG difference is that Hugo has armed his with an AK "neighborhood watch". The Swiss-model of a National Guard gone perverse. And a worst case example of a Latin "Guardia National"...
..and folk should be more aware that it's primarily the US that provides the Russians the capitol to ignore their internal needs while developing and exporting arms and significant weap sytems to countries such as Venezuela and India. And "dollar stores" provide enough nickels for the Chinese to work similar mischief.
Just as we've had prewar economic good will tossed back at US as shrapnel, the Russians and Chinese are leveraging our present good will in a similar manner via their arms deals with folk like Hugo.

As for Hugo, Jim Reeves said it best...
"Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone
Let's pretend that we're together all alone
I'll tell the man to turn the juke box way down low
And you can tell your friend there with you he'll have to go
...Though love is blind make up your mind I've got to know
Should I hang up or will you tell him he'll have to go"

Siempre Fiel!

And the idiot was stupid enough to 'retire' his FALs in favor of the AKs.

Now that's a truly stupid move.
