Sufis, Iranian police clash in holy city: report

LONDON, February 14 (IranMania) - Clashes broke out Monday between members of the Sufi sect and Iranian police in the Shiite Muslim holy city of Qom, the semi-official Fars news agency and websites reported.
Fars said some 50 Sufis demonstrated against the closure of their place of worship in Qom. "There was some violence," it said, without elaborating.
The website Baztab, which is close to the conservative camp in Iran, said the security forces used tear gas to break up the protest after local authorities decided to close the Sufi centre.
The protesters hurled stones from the rooftop, said Baztab, which published a photograph of hundreds of people gathered in a Qom street as plumes of smoke rose into the air.
Sufism is a mystical sect of Islam that is regarded with suspicion by many Shiite and Sunni Muslims.
This is a crackdown on the Sufi sect.
The Sufis protested and riots have broken out for 2 nights. The regime has ordered martial law for the city of Qom.

In case you haven't heard, we want them to "jump up and down and light things on fire", if it's to protest against the regime.
These sufis are being descriminated against and they are demonstrating against the regime for the right to practice their religion.
I have never heard of Sufi terrorists. I think we should support these guys against the Iranian mullahs.

There might be a sufi in Iran at present, but there aren't 50 in the whole ME.
The Sufis are in the unenviable position of being thoroughly despised (and occasionally massacred) by both the Sunni Wahhabis and the Shi'ite extremists as well. It does not surprise me in the least that someone in a theological orbit as eccentric as Ahmadinejad would find them intolerable. I wish them luck - they're going to need it.
We can't support them, and we can't support them against the mullahs.
How many Sufis in Qom are there? Are we talking a small population or lots and lots of people?
Qom has been a center of Shi'ite Islam since the 8th century and became a place of pilgrimage in the 17th century.
It is the location of the largest theological university in Iran.
There is one now and then. Maybe one now. The rest are students.
I know, its all so comical. I guess even the good ones arent against a good stoning and looting now and again. huh? Why dont they behave like men and overthrow their government?
I don't know. I'll guess anywhere from 200 thousand to 1 million.
Sorry. That number I gave was for all of Iran, not just Qom.
