CORPUS CHRISTI The Austin attorney shot by Vice President Dick Cheney suffered a minor heart attack early this morning when a single birdshot pellet migrated into the organ and caused an irregular beat, doctors said today.

Sorry, but I think that's ridiculous. If Cheney were to resign now, the opposition would put a notch on their belts in the game of gotcha.
I'm not advocating an immediate resignation by any means.
In the course of a few months after this blows over, I'd reassign Cheney (for health reasons, wink-wink) -- as I've been suggesting for weeks now.
Any new GOP VP would gather instant clout and momentum for the 2008 election.
Now THIS is called "strategery" :-)
heh heh. Yuh so shmot.
"McArthur didn't act like he was President ;-)"
MacArthur paid a price for that, as I recall.
No. It is NOT. That's the point. Before 41 a VP hadn't been elected after his principal since like... Martin Van Buren? They may take over after the president leaves (assassination or resignation) and they may be elected, but VPs don't get elected. Algore was latest in a long line to lose.
Doesn't mean it can't happen. Historical fact does not guarantee future results.
AND the country.
One assumes MacArthur having fought under FDR for 12 years felt Truman was a pretender, and not capable of grasping the military ramifications in the Chinese/Korean arena. MacArthur wound up correct (unfortunately for the 50,000 Americans who died in Korea.)
Both Truman and Nixon were the Rodney Dangerfields of U.S. Presidents.
Oh, MacArthur thought he knew more about pretty much everything, than pretty much everybody. He just ran hard into that pesky "chain of command" thing, and discovered to his amazement he was not actually at the top of it. ;-D

I'm referring to recent history.
Veeps are traditionally "in the game." They never get trounced.
Again, even Gore won the popular vote, lost by a whisker.
Humphrey lost the popular vote by a whisker in 1968; And Nixon in 1960 got ripped off.
IF Dubya chooses to replace Cheney eventually (as he should, though not immediately) that VP would be a front-runner and obviously "in the game."
True...
But MacArthur was right about the ChiComs. As was Patton about the Russians.
That pesky "chain of command" was politics and strategery at its worse and was costly beyond our imagination.
Truman was a dolt for his part in WWII and the Korean War, as was LBJ for Vietnam.
In fact ALL Democrat Presidents are proven dolts ;-)
Nah gah happen
If it don't happen, the fix is in. AGAIN (just like in 1992 when GH played the patsy, Perot was a plant, and Bubba won with a paltry 43% of the vote.)
