Pence Gets Presidential Reception
Human Events ^ | 2-11-06 | Robert Bluey

Rep. Mike Pence (R.-Ind.), the HUMAN EVENTS Man of the Year, delivered the best speech at CPAC. We were fortunate enough to have Pence join us afterward for a special HUMAN EVENTS discussion at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.

Pence spoke to about 40 die-hard activists and conservative bloggers at CPAC. He received a standing ovation upon entering the room and took time out of his morning schedule to answer all the questions that were posed to him.

Among the highlights:

On Reform of the United Nations: Carroll Andrew Morse of the blog Anchor Rising asked Pence the likelihood of immigration reform. Pence said he remains intent to see his UN reform bill, co-sponsored by International Relations Chairman Henry Hyde (R.-Ill.), through to passage. The bill is so tough on the UN that it has run into some trouble with UN Ambassador John Bolton.

On Conservatives in Washington: That’s Washington State, not Washington, D.C. Pence was asked by Bob Williams, president of the Evergreen Freedom Foundation, how he could have bigger impact in the Evergreen State. Pence said someone should invite him. He went on to praise Rep. Cathy McMorris (R.-Wash.), one of the rising stars in the GOP.

On Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, I-69 and running for President in 2008: One of Pence’s fans from Indiana asked an interesting assortment of questions that ranged from his view on Interstate 69 to a presidential run in 2008. On the first two questions -- about Daniels’ budget-cutting efforts and construction of I-69 as a toll road -- Pence gave a thumbs-up. But he openly dodged the third question about Sen. Evan Bayh’s (R.-Ind.) potential presidential candidacy in 2008 and whether Pence would throw his hat in the ring. “Probably one Hoosier running from Indiana is enough in 2008,” Pence said.

On new Majority Leader John Boehner (R.-Ohio) and ethics reform: Although Pence was an influential supporter of Rep. John Shadegg (R.-Ariz.), he said Boehner gives the GOP a solid leader who has a record as a reformer. But Pence warned that just changing the rules as they apply to lobbyists won’t get the job done. He said Congress needs to do a much better job with taxpayers’ money.

UPDATE -- 12:24 p.m.: More coverage of Pence’s post-speech meeting is available on the American Spectator’s blog. David Holman questions why CPAC scheduled Pence to speak at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.

demonRAT's would love a 'no name' candidate to compete with. A no namer - won't work. Pence; a nice guy, great ideas, but he needs to deliver 'something' besides rhetoric.

Pence is only beginning his charge to the front...he's kind of like batting against Nolan Ryan [in his prime] with an aluminum fungo bat - no extra base hits in the boy's immediate future.

Pence is only a "No name" until people know his name- get it? After the convention,Pence's ID would be as high as Guiliani or McCain.Raising name ID is what the primaries are for.Hillary's negatives will be at 45% while Pence's will be less than 20.Name ID is a non starter and a non issue.

Thanks for the ping. This guy needs more media exposure, at least among Republicans. I can't understand the circular reasoning of not talking about someone because no one has been talking about them.

He is pro-life, pro gun, and has a track record for trimming the pork. That is worthy of note.

"But he openly dodged the third question about Sen. Evan Bayh’s (R.-Ind.) potential presidential candidacy in 2008..."

Uh, isn't that supposed to be a "D" behind Bayh's name?

I notice you '05' FReepers are pretty excited for the 'new'. Great...but without any kind of portfolio, Pence is like a 'new broom'...great in the beginning but how long do they last?

The only problem is: There has NEVER been a member of the House of Representatives elected President of The U.S. It's hard enough for a Senator to be elected.

Why don't you two 05er's continue your debate and support of Pence with one another and I'll just watch & enjoy your rhetoric.

You are not listening.Pence has already done more, accomplished more than all the other moderate-conservatives combined. His budget battles and the MEDICARE battle are legendary. When it comes to things conservatives care about-no Senator,No Governor is even in the same league.

I do not believe in being a slave to History.According to "History" we never would have had Reagan. If we let History be the standard then Socialism and a huge Government is inevitable.

The father of our party Lincoln had only served as a Congressman before he was elected President. We need to know our history. No Senator has ever won the nomination for the GOP. The record is actually 2-0 Congressman over Senators.

It is not about what position someone serves as, Alan Keyes was never elected to anything, either was Forbes, Bauer, Robertson, etc. Yet they were Presidential candidates that many of our base supported. The most conservative candidate wins every time. And Pence is the most conservative.
