The medal ceremony was really sweet as well. What a cool kid! (Still in desperate need of a haircut though).

BTW, the fluff piece on Kwan was nice as well..

Well my local news just cut Bob Costas off before he had a chance to finish what he was saying.

Guess that's my cue to say goodnight. See you all tomorrow night.

Awesome kid, Shaun White! I'm SO happy for he and his family and dang proud to see a young American like him.

"Shaun White nearly never made it to the Olympics after two heart operations as a baby. And despite winning halfpipe gold on Sunday, it was only the sight of his family that produced tears.

White, dubbed the "Flying Tomato" because of his red locks, splatted his rivals with an awesome first run in the final to justify his favorite tag after recovering from a poor first qualifying run. The American battled even harder as a youngster, undergoing heart surgery twice before the age of five after being born with a heart defect.

"For my mom it is great because I had heart problems as a baby. She'd hold my foot during operations," the 19-year-old told a news conference as he blamed his family for a rare show of emotion after claiming gold.

"It was just tears, not crying," White shouted, when teammate and silver medalist Danny Kass said he saw him crying. "The family comes up ...their eyes are beet red. It wasn't my fault, it was my family."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cheers and tears!
Yeah, I thought the Kwan clips were good.
Those closing show comments from Costa (did I get his name right?) were pretty bad. Can the TV networks ever get over their infatuation with the under-22-year-olds?
(As if Kwan is ancient...out with the old, in with the new wave..)
I'm proud for Shaun, wanted him to win.
My words about Costa's comments were frustration with the networks, definitely not meaning anything against Shaun.
The networks, and media in general, are almost nausuating with their emphasis on "youth" (and you're over the hill at 25....).
I think that the closing comments were a mixture of NBC panicking because there's no Kwan to drive ratings (NBC "offered" Kwan a commentator spot for the Women's Event - talk about insensitive) and Costa's lamely trying to console America (ie I know that 99.9% of you are probably upset that Kwan won't be competing, but isn't Shaun White great).
You're right. NBC is most likely in a panic.
They probably don't need to be. I think they'll still get lots of viewers for the women's ice skating....will be interesting to see how the US girls do.
The Ladies' SP is on vs. American Idol, so the only hope that NBC had for good ratings was Kwan. Also, Sasha is good, but tends to crash and burn at big competitions, and the other two U.S. girls are really BAD, so the U.S. will likely not do well. Therefore, the T.V. ratings will probably plummet in the U.S.
More Michelle coming up....will we ever get past her dropping out? We have 3 skaters that will be going for the gold....will they ever get mentioned without bringing up Michelle?
Yeah ... 3 skaters that EARNED the right to be there instead of begging their way in. I say it's about time she dropped out. The local media kept saying what a class act Kwan is by doing so and all I could think about is how she was pouting after not winning the gold last time and then getting the provisional to join a team she did not qualify for. That's class?
With all due respect the replacement Hughes has never skated in an international competition. Compare that to Kwan. Just because she missed the Nationals last month does not mean she is worse then Hughes. Frankly it is the opposite. Had Kwan been healthy for Nationals she would have placed in one of the 3 top spots regardless.
Meanwhile she bowed out early enough for a replacement to come in.
Its the media sucking this for all its worth not Kwan who left Turino.
And one more thing, the only reason we are sending 3 women to the ladies competition is because Michelle Kwan placed third in the worlds in 2005. If only Sasha Cohen had placed we would have only been sending 2 girls.
