Wasn't there some humongous big blizzard in the 1880s - after the storm stranded people walked across the frozen Hudson to get to New Jersey?

Yep. It was much worse than this storm. In the olden days, they used to leave snow on the streets so that the horses could pull sleighs. The snow from the Great White Hurricane of 1888 was way too much, and actually lead to the creation of the New York City subway.

I spent a winter in a town in Sweden where they did that - people would ski to school or go on these kick sleds - looked like a kitchen chair on two wicked long runners - you stood on the runners and kicked, with whatever passenger or luggage you wanted on the chair. Don't remember any horses in the streets though.
