U.S. strengthens ties with Moldova

CHISINAU, Moldova, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- On Feb. 7 a Moldovan-U.S. task force met for the first time to help Moldova take preparatory steps for joining NATO.

The effort follows the Aug. 2005 decision by NATO to sign an initial joint partnership Action Plan with Moldova in early 2006 as a first affiliate step towards eventualy NATO membership.

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin first visited NATO headquarters in June 2005 to discuss Moldova's participation in an Individual Partnership Action Plan.

Moldpress news agency reported that Moldovan Defense Minister Valeriu Plesca said forming a relationship with NATO was important for his impoverished country. Implementation of the NATO Action Plan would attract NATO investment and help Moldova upgrade its national security and defense infrastructure to NATO standards.

Moldova declared its independence from the USSR in August 1991 and is focusing its efforts to join the European Union in 2010.

People seem to be forgetting that NATO isn't social club, it's a military alliance. Moldova needs to standardize it's military to meet NATO requirements. Can it possibly do that? Also, what about Transdiniester?

Russia signed an agreement with NATO to withdraw its troops from Transdniester. We're still waiting for them to keep their word...

Great, we're coozing up to a communist regime. I'm sure you're celebrating.

I think he's deliberately confusing freely-elected communists with, well, traditional communists.

He sure loves the ones over the border in Transdniester. Putinistas will side with anyone against the US if they are Russia's friends.

Why do you continue to waste bandwidth on your stupid comments? You support Free Trade, one of Marx's top planks for world revolution.

No, I'm saying we're making a mistake, one that you applaud.

That Free Trade leads to world revolution and those who support it are his fellow travellers, yes I do. So now you need to decide how close you and Marx are, Mr. Free Trade.

That's right. Someone who roots for Russia against the USA at every turn is also opposed to free enterprise. Big suprise, huh?
