I believe he's sincere and I applaud his undeniable courage in refraining from reflexively bashing Bush for every evil in the world, but I am not yet won over.
He's a huge advocate for the liberal perspective of the causes of and the solutions to poverty and AIDS. It's a myopic perspective that, however well-intentioned, is desperately ill suited to finding workable solutions. Dumping truckloads of other peoples' money on third world poverty and paying vast amounts for drugs to treat the ymptoms of easily preventible STDs has never solved those problems and never will. Rather, these liberal "solutions" have tended to create even more poverty and ever higher incidences of STDs.
Maybe not to us, but to his fan base, it IS worth a lot in goodwill toward President Bush.
The idea is not without merit. I know I'm going to take some flak for this but I'll say it anyways. Many of these African nations were plunged into debt by corrupt dictators who squandered foreign aid into their Swiss bank accounts and Belgian chalets. But many of these dictators were propped up by the U.S. government for their anti-communist stance. Efforts of the local population to topple them were in vain. Congo's Seku is but one example. It is almost synonymous with having an unwanted relative stay at your house and run up a credit card bill. Should you have to pay for it?
Plus I like U2s music.
Sunday, November 8th, 1987. McNichol's Arena, Denver, Colorado. The Joshua Tree tour. Probably the greatest concert I have ever witnessed.
While it would be interesting to learn how much of his money he donates, it is clear he donates quite a bit of his time to help others.
I don't agree with having to send a bigger percentage of our GNP to the continent of Africa. I don't necessarily take that out on Bono or the President, but I just would rather the money stay here.
Well, I definately won't disagree with that. I know that he probably looks at things from a socialistic liberal perspective.
I just appreciate his honesty about who he is, and what he's trying to do.
Very true.
If I misunderstood your post - I apologize.
Your post gave me the impression his opinion is not worth much.
You think his opinion is opinion is worth as much as the next person on the street...I disagree. The average person on the street has not devoted the time, energy, money, and talent to this issue as Bono has.
You wonder how I know what he's done?
I read.
He's smart...why would he want to piss off the people he's trying to get to him him. Not like his pal, Geldof, who apprently spit at Blair. Can you imagine? GELDOF.. No wonder his ex-wife committed suicide.
