A former president, a softly gray-haired and chronically dyspeptic gentleman who seems to have judged the world to be just barely deserving of his presence, pointedly insulted a sitting president who was, in fact, sitting right behind him. The Clintons unveiled their 2008 campaign. A rhyming preacher, one of the old lions, a man of warmth and stature, freely used the occasion to verbally bop the sitting president on the head.
But, apparently, she doesn't see anything wrong with it...
Hmmm. Thanks. I like Peggy, usually, but when she goes off the rails, she really goes off the rails.
No, it's not a celebration of American freedom to insult people at funerals. It's disrepectful of the dead, not to speak of the President.
I don't know what it is with Peggy and George W. Bush. She just doesn't seem to like him, maybe because he threatens to rival Ronald Reagan.
Nonsense. Reagan was Reagan, and will be considered a great president whatever the final judgment may be on Bush. It's really stupid to be jealous and catty. This reminds me of that truly unfortunate column about last years SOTU address.
Sometimes I think Peggy needs to get out out of the house a little more.
Peggy doin' drugs or something?
Well, I missed her column about the latest SOTU when it was published, but I'm reading it now. It sucks so far, also. Peggy seems to be getting very bitter in her old(er) age. (I'm probably not that much younger, but I hope I'm not as likely to be called Mrs. Bitterman as she is right now.)
It was: We do free speech here.
I think her point was, whether or NOT you think "something's wrong with this picture", we can still have a spectrum of viewpoints all contained in a civilized and loving ceremony. Nowhere else on Earth does this happen..
God bless America!
You know i haven't posted about this in order to think about it... but I think my gut reaction still stands - this was an intensely political woman, every thing she did that was about money or her legacy was about politics. She would likely have wanted her funeral to be political.
now, because the president chooses to attend should the speakers have censored themselves from saying what they would have said if he were not there?
Typo... sorry.
should be "every thing she did that was NOT about money or her legacy was about politics. She would likely have wanted her funeral to be political."
The only person Peggy Noonan seems to like is herself. She's insufferable.
I'm not the world's biggest fan of Noonan's but I do like much of her writing. And I think if one's read her comments on Clinton, one can understand what she meant by this.
She means she loves them for their entertainment value. She famously once described Billy as "an actor," using the term used to slam Reagan.
I think some people have to keep that in mind when reading the last paragraphs of this. She's saying "God, I love them" the way one says "Get a load of these two."
I wonder if Peggy's okay with the Fred Phelps' protests at soldiers' funerals?
Sorry--I suppose Ms Noonan's idea of a funeral is different than mine. Personally, I don't think insults of any sort belong at a funeral. Instead of showing this to the world, I would prefer that NO ONE had seen it!
There you go...
Most of us are pretty political on this site, but Noonan is a writer and a lyrical one at that.. can appreciate certain qualities in people apart from their politics.
Stop making excuses for Peggy; she lost it long ago.
BS. That is what I have to say about your comment. Dont' like it? Too bad.
Don't miss her point. It's not that she is saying "what" was said is a good thing. She is pointing out that we are a free people who respect free speech as despicable as the speaker might be.
