Russo-Chechen conflict dates since about 1820s [i.e. from way before anyone heard the word "Wahhabism"], and has been periodically flaring up ever since. While in its most recent flare-up it has acquired an islamist tinge, given its sordid history [including Stalin's mass deportation of the Chechens in the 1940s and other kind and nice things of the same kind] it could be seen as an example of a bona fide ethnic liberation movement.

Wahhabism or no wahhabism, even in 1920 the Chechens fought under the green banner of the prophet (the one that features in those Danish cartoons, you know...).

Their then leader Shamil definitely used all the Islamic rhetoric of martyrdom and the rest of the sh*t.
