Musician's Friend calls them "mics". When pronounced, it sounds like somebody is trying to tell an Irish joke.
When Al Gore was touring Monticello with Clinton, he asked who the busts of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin were. That was also caught by the press covering the visit, but I don' recall it getting this much press.
