For your discussion.

It's the big debate about the future of the GOP. What is the line between a Republican who makes some mistakes, and a Republican who advances policies that are an affront to the principles that the Republican Party is supposed to advance.

I obviously agree with the author of this column. If the GOP gives up the tax issue then they've given up the single most defining distinction between the two major parties.

I've grown tired of the big-spending Republicans in Congress (who look like the Democrats when they held the majority) and Republican Governors like Mitch Daniels and Arnold Schwarzenegger who seem more interested in getting along with their colleagues in the Democrat Party then they do in advancing conservative/Republican ideals.

Mitch is probably worse for us than anyone running against him would have been. At least the dims left the damned clocks alone.

Luckily, I saw through him and didn't waste my vote on him. This state would be in great shape if Gividen, the libertarian, would have won.

Democrats and Republicans are cut from the same statist cloth and are similarly worthless. Mitch proves this day in and day out.

He's a one termer for sure.

I cant stand the guy, I voted for miller in the primary. Living in south bend I knew kernan was a real scumbag. I voted for mitch, but regret it. He wont be re-elected, he has burned his bridge with everyone in the state.

I'm disappointed with "My Man Mitch". He got my vote but he's not performing as I suspected. The toll road lease seems like very short term thinking to fund his road projects.

I agree with you, but look at what he was handed when he took the office also.
If he can start bringing back industry to this state and increase the tax base that way I will guarantee he will approach the problem different.
Right now that should be his #1 priority (as difficult as it is) and THEN start the major cuts needed. In truth the problem is a catch-22, he makes the cuts too deep now and he hurts the states chances for growth by attracting industry back here. I will give him another year, 18 months to see where we are before I start really coming down on him.

Well, you are wiser than me. My friends in Indiana didn't think he was the greatest but they WERE very excited that his campaign was surging and he was going to take the Gov's office for the GOP.

But it just seems like he's performed worse than even his critics might have suggested. I just don't get it. He's been quite a let down to me at least.

Not to mention higher real Estate taxes (ours went up 50% last year alone), getting us on daylight savings time (which nobody wanted) and now wanting to lease the Toll Road in Northern Indiana to a European Country for the next 75 years(also against the residents of Indiana's wishes)....yeah....he won't be back.

And his time zone agenda turned into as much of a cluster fudge as we currently have. No improvments there.

I think your opinion of the ex-Governor is dead on. Let's hope the Republicans can come up with someone better for 2008 so the state doesn't go back to the DIM column for another 16 years.

I'll leave the toll-road issue to you Hoosiers to discuss. You all seem to get so heated about it. I can understand why, but I don't know the best outcome so I'll shut up and watch you guys resolve it.

He's an authoritarian. As long as Republicans allow candidates like him to ruin their party, you will keep discovering the candy is filled with dog poop as soon as you bite into it. It's too late for Indiana, though. We have a whole box of it to eat now.

I not a huge fan of Daniels but look what he inherited from 16 yrs of Evvie and FrankO:
they got the lottery money, the casino money, raised the income tax, the property tax, the sales tax,
AND STILL RAN THE STATE INTO A BIG BUDGET DEFICIT

What I wonder is if there would have been much difference if Joe Kernen was Governor? Hard to speculate about what he would have done, but I suspect it wouldn't be that different.

I regret voting for Mitch.
I use the toll road several times a week. And he says the rate won't go up? Right.
And don't get me started on the time zone thing.

I hate my govenor.
I wish Kernan was still govenor.

It would be as it was before. Which is much better than what Daniels has done.

If left to his own devices, Mitch would do more damage in 4 years than the dims did in 16. He needs to be recalled. Can we do that here? I'm not sure.
