Lt. G.W. Bush, Captured in Bronze
Washington Post ^ | February 10, 2006 | Peter Baker

Presidents are often memorialized in their most famous moments -- George Washington crossing the Delaware, Theodore Roosevelt at San Juan Hill.

Now President Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard has been immortalized in bronze. The National Guard Association of the United States yesterday unveiled a bust of a young Lt. George W. Bush. The association expressed its pride in Bush, who is perhaps its most famous alumnus around today.

Bush's service may still be a bit of a sore subject for him, though. He seemed no more eager to talk about it yesterday than he did in his 2004 reelection campaign, when critics questioned whether he manipulated his guard service to avoid having to serve in Vietnam.

The president made no mention of the contretemps yesterday, and in fact offered virtually no comment on the bust at all. His only reference was to thank the man who raised the money for it, retired Chief Warrant Officer Lewis King, and the man who sculpted it, Charles Parks.

"Charles caught me before my hair went gray," Bush said.

that there is no "2008" to show the end of Bush's term of office.

It will be 2009, by the way. But you're right about the DU hysteria...

You have to admire their talent over at DU--How DO they manage to type with one hand while flinging their own poo with the other?

Where did you find the cool cartoon? My husband and I love it.

It's not a Cox and Forkum cartoon is it?

Now it's time for a bronze statue of Teddy Kennedy in a half-submerged Oldsmobile.

Back when the Dan Rather/CBS/fontgate episode was going on, I reworked one I found on line. Just felt it deserved another shot here!

In retrospect, let's hypothetically assume for a moment that it was Lt. John F. Kerry who was in the Massachusetts Air National Guard, and Lt. George W. Bush, USN, who went to Vietnam for a four month tour of duty, earning three purple hearts, etc., here is how the lamestream media would have spun those two stories:

"Lt. Kerry was flying risky and unstable F-102 fighter-interceptors, prepared to face incoming Soviet nuclear bombers at any time during the Cold War, had a conflict broken out between the United States and the U.S.S.R. He was considered one of the most skilled pilots in his squadron, he actually requested service in Vietnam but was turned down. Many of Lt. Kerry's fellow pilots were lost due to the unpredictability of the F-102. Lt. Kerry defended America in the air, in the finest traditions of the Air National Guard."

...and then:

"Lt. George W. Bush has taken great pride in telling his stories of combat in Vietnam, pointing to the three purple hearts he was awarded during his four month tour of duty, but despite his apparent valor, he has confessed to having performed actions worthy of a war criminal, testifying before the Congress upon his return from Vietnam, about the wholesale carnage of a suffering people, about U.S. troops behaving as "Genghis Khan", and while Lt. Bush had every right to express his opinion, it is also clear that he violated U.S. law by traveling to Paris to meet with representatives of the Communists in Hanoi and the Viet Cong, while his fellow servicemen were still engaged in hostilities, while his government was involved in negotiations with our adversaries. For Americans, the choice is clear: a self-confessed war criminal cannot, and must not be elected to the highest office in the land."

(I cannot take credit for all of this, this comparison has been made in the past by others far more eloquent than I.)

I'm still cracking up at DU's reaction to Alito's confirmation last week.

That was classic.

Why comment on it when the facts are on your side and your fellow associates at the ComPost are just going to spin things anyway?
