Rendell, Swann in dead heat

By David M. Brown TRIBUNE-REVIEW Friday, February 10, 2006

Republican challenger Lynn Swann has caught Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell, a new Pittsburgh Tribune-Review/WTAE-Channel 4 Keystone poll shows. Swann, who trailed Rendell by 20 points five months ago, has jumped to within three points -- a statistical tossup. More than half -- 54 percent -- of voters questioned believe it is time for a change in the governor's office. About two in five -- 39 percent -- said they believe Rendell deserves re-election.

Simple matter. The voters are waiting to see if Swann has an articulate plan to handle the state's many problems. Once they see he can hold his own against fast Eddie in debate and that he can talk the talk, expect a 10 point lead.

Let's hope Rendell's "ref advantage" in Philly is minimized prior to the November vote.

Someone help me out here. I'm not good with statistics.

Isn't 497 voters a pretty small sample? Is it too small to get a proper reading of public sentiment given that Pennsylvania is a huge state?

This poll was taken before the Steelers won the Super Bowl.

It's too bad the Superbowl wasn't held in October. All that free publicity would have come in handy closer to the election.

Yeah, and they probably did not poll anyone from the Pittsburg area. I have no doubt Swann is even with him. This election is Swan's to lose. If he runs a decent campaign, he wins.

The voters in PA already know fast eddie's plan to handle the state's many problems. Tax the people to death and throw many millions of dollars at any problem, real or perceived. I think they are getting tired of it. I know I am.

Of course.

They can't deny the surge, but they can ensure that he doesn't get any further in the polls. The MSM needs the horse-race, and they can manipulate the polls to keep this race a "statistical tossup."

Then, they can use the "tossup" to their advantage to motivate their base to turn out at the polls (as if that's even possible in Philadelphia, where they voted near the statistical maximums last time).

This is easy. All of Pittsburgh and surrounding areas will vote for Lynn Swann and all of Philly will vote for Rendell.

It's just that the Philly folks don't know that yet.
