WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Taiwanese citizen was charged in the United States on Thursday with being a covert agent for Beijing, and accused together with a Frenchman of trying to illegally export an F-16 jet engine, Blackhawk helicopter engines and cruise missiles to China.

U.S. prosecutors in Miami said a federal grand jury had returned a nine-count indictment against Ko-Suen Moo, of Taipei, and Maurice Serge Voros, of Paris.

The indictment alleged that the defendants violated the Arms Export Control Act by trying to export controlled items without a license to China, including the engines, the cruise missiles and air-to-air missiles, the prosecutors said.

The case follows repeated U.S. expressions of concern about Beijing's strategic intentions as China increasingly pours proceeds from its rapidly expanding economy into its military.

Taiwan will probably become part of China without a shot ever being fired. Why not, Hong Kong did.

Why not? Because they don't want to give up their freedom, and because they don't have a lease expiring.

The two may someday merge peacefully but not until the PROC sheds its totalitarian regime.

Taiwan and China are a lot cozier than most are willing to admit.

The speech also caused concern in Washington and prompted the United States to reiterate its opposition to Taiwan independence and its allegiance to the 'one China policy,' which states that there is only one China and that Beijing is China's legal government.

China must suck if they need f-16's engine tech for their fighters, its 1970s vintage.Sad bastards that have to pirate and steal everything. This mean they wont be on the cutting edge of technology. Disgusting regime.

Surely it's for signature analysis, to help them build better detection mechanisms, or attack vectors?

Nah its an old jet and it signature isnt anything special.Only thing I can see is taiwan uses these. The chinese pilots arent that good anyhow. The F-22 will rape anything they have.

Let's hope none of our Taiwanese planes are over in China right now. While none of their pilots or planes are hardly good enough to take our guys on, missile technology can quickly even the score. Unfortunately, it's also the easiest to steal and duplicate, then the attack signatures just need to be tweaked. The U.S. would be wise to keep a close eye on both Taiwan and China, especially if our policy has now become they merge.

I agree hence the reason the US doesnt sell elite weapons to taiwan. Nuke will be flying if the US and China ever get in to it so pray that it never happens because china will cease to exist and the US will loose some major cities.

Sure, the point was missles are China's preferred weapon, I wouldn't want to see any of that technology sent to Taiwan should it end up on the mainland in any possible form. What choice is Taiwan left with?

So on one hand you think they're headed toward peaceful reunification, on the other you point out Chen's speech hostile to unification.

I don't think you have anything of substance to add besides linking to any and every recent news article.
