"Pirv was one of two Portland officers injured while firing .45-caliber Glocks in March 2004, prompting Portland Police Chief Derrick Foxworth to order the recall of the weapons carried by 230 officers. The bureau replaced them with 9mm Glocks. "Great fix! Replace a powerful, effective plastic gun with a lower power, ineffective plastic gun. DUH!

They should be carrying 1911's.

I like .45 ACP, but a strong argument can be made that modern ballistics has made the 9 mm a better round. I personally prefer the 9 mm to any handgun cartridge. A good 9 mm has plenty of stopping power, its accurate, and it is very easy to handle.

They should have gone to SIG Sauers. I've had two Glocks come apart on me and I've personally seen nearly half a dozen others that Kb'd... in 9mm, .40, 10mm, and .45.
Shooting a Glock is risking your life.

"a powerful, effective plastic gun"
None of the important parts in a Glock are made of plastic. You probably know this, but yet I feel it's obligatory to say this repeatedly to Glock-haters.
Try and keep in mind that, whatever your own personal preferences are, turning to the other firearm and deriding it only plays into the hands of the gun-grabbers. I can't count the number of articles that quotes a "gun expert" who is busy reciting his personal preferences, which get reported in print as "firearms manufacturers are irresponsible and evil."

I like my original Glock 17 9mm. Seems to do what it was designed to do.
Don't know what issues the cops might have had with the .45s, never handled one of them.
But since I have been in Portland since last night, spent the entire day here in meetings (at the freaking airport of all places), and will be here doing the same thing until this time tomorrow, I feel a little safer knowing all those .45s are off the street.
Dave in Portland (temporarily, thank God).
