MILITARY VEHICLES
The story of the HMMWV

Even though the Jeep was the motorized symbol of the American army during WWII and the Korean War, by the 1970s it had become obsolete. The military needed a new general-purpose vehicle efficient at moving soldiers and light equipment to the battlefield. How that vehicle came into being and turned into a civilian model as well is a war story in itself.

On January 2, 1985, AM General rolled the first HMMWV (aka. HUMMER) off the assembly line of their new South Bend facility. The first HMMWV was a standard Military vehicle.

The call went out to three veteran military contractors: Chrysler Defense, Teledyne Continental and AM General Corporation (AMG). The latter was a distant relative of the old Willys-Overland company that had designed the first Jeep prior to WWII.

The military M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles were developed to replace jeeps and lighter trucks. As early as the 1970’s, the jeeps and lighter trucks had begun to show signs of inadequacy during military missions in rough terrain and a new and improved type of vehicle was much sought after. In 1979, the U.S. Military lay out the requirements for a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, and in 1980 the first prototype was finished. The prototype was called M998 and had been produced by AM General. The U.S. Military liked the prototype and AM General begun to produce a series of different High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle prototypes. Eventually, the U.S. Military ordered 55,000 HMMWV’s from AM General. Today, you will find more than 15 different types of Humvees’ in the United States armed forces. They are used a cargo carriers, troop carriers, ambulances, automatic weapons platforms, missile carriers, surface-to-air missile platforms and much more. Fording 0.762 meters is possible with a standard Humvee, and with a deep-water fording kit you can ford up to 1.5 meters.

The military Hummer was configured at first for the use of six different vehicle types: the Cargo-Troop Carrier; the Armament Carrier; the TOW Missile Carrier; the Ambulance Carrier; the Shelter Carrier, and the Prime Mover. Based upon these six types, more than twenty subtypes were developed, many which differed from one another only in minor details. For example, there were seven different subtypes of the Cargo/Troop Carrier and eight different subtypes of the Armament Carrier available at one time. In response to US military needs, AM General has updated and added new models to its production line while discontinuing others. Here are some of the best Military Hummer types.

This Hummer belongs to the 1St Cavalry Division, this Hummer has been configured as a troop carrier. In this configuration the vehicle can carry a two-person crew and eight passengers on bench seats in the rear of the vehicle. Taking part in a large training exercise, the crew of this Hummer removed the vehicle's front windshield in order to cut down on reflection, which might give away their position at sunrise or sunset.

Like all other variants of the Hummer in US military service, the Armament Carrier has been improved over the years. The original Ml 025 (and the winch- equipped M1026) was updated to the Al standard. With the introduction of the A2 standard, only the Ml 025A2 survived into production. The Ml O25A2 was also modified to mount a TOW Missile Launcher system. The picture is of a M966 US Army Armament Carrier mounting a TOW running at high speed.

The Us military uses mostly the heavy Hummer variant M998 Cargo/Troop Carrier (pictured here). In fact, the M998 designation represents the entire Hummer family of US military vehicles. Most other versions of the US military Hummers are based on this one vehicle type. Over the years, improvements to this basic M998 vehicle have resulted in a M998A1 and M998A2 series of Hummer vehicles now produced by AM General and fielded by US military forces around the world.

Depending on its mission and weather conditions the US military Hummer can be open or closed-topped and fitted with a removable roll bar. Photographed at the National Training Center (NTC), located in the desert region of Southern California, this Hummer crew from the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment is taking a break during a training exercise. Due to the extreme desert heat, this four-door Hummer has been stripped of all its doors and of its rooftop, but not of the roll bar.

In 1992, AM General began production of versions of the Humvee, called the HUMMER for civilian use. Known as "the world's most serious 4x4," the vehicle has found favor with commercial users who appreciate the value of HUMMER's long life and amazing performance, and individuals who seek the ultimate in toughness and mobility. The first civilian High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, the Hummer, entered the market in 1991 and soon grew immensely popular. It was initially promoted by a race in 1990 where two Hummers traversed the rough terrain between London, UK and Beijing, China. A majority of the trip took place on the coarse roads of central Soviet Union. The drive was broadcasted in the United States, and the Hummer received a lot of publicity before even being launched. One of the first civilian owners of a Hummer was Arnold Schwarzenegger, which naturally also gave the vehicle additional publicity. What made the Humvee’s really famous was however the 1991 Operation: Desert Storm in the Middle East. During this war, soldiers driving the various Humvee’s were frequently seen on the news in America.

In 1803, Thomas Jefferson commissioned Lewis and Clark to lead an expedition across an unexplored America to the Pacific coast. The expedition was called "Corps of Discovery"—and it lived up to its name. It cataloged 300 new species, identified nearly 50 Indian tribes, and traversed terrain that had never been seen by Europeans.

They were joined along the way by a French fur trader and his wife Sacajawea. They soon found her to be invaluable as an interpreter and guide.

During the trip, Sacajawea was reunited with her family. Her older brother had become the tribe's chief, and he helped them acquire horses and a map of the uncharted West. Without Sacajawea's and her brother's unexpected help, the expedition may not have succeeded.

The Bible tells of an expedition that also received unexpected help. The Israelites had sent spies into Jericho, a city in the land promised to them. Rahab agreed to ensure their escape in exchange for her family's protection when Jericho fell. In this way the sovereign God of grace used her to prepare the way for a victory in Israel's conquest and settlement of the Promised Land.
