HARRISBURG, Pa. Bill Scranton dropped out of the governor's race Tuesday after it became clear that Republican Party leaders planned to endorse former Pittsburgh Steelers star Lynn Swann for the nomination.
Swann is seeking to become Pennsylvania's first black governor. Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell is running for a second term in November.
Swann had locked up more than enough unofficial support to win the endorsement of GOP leaders Saturday. The GOP primary is set for May 16.
Scranton, a wealthy businessman and former lieutenant governor whose father, Wiliam, was governor in the 1960s, said in a statement that he had doubts as to whether he could win over party leaders.
Scranton's campaign ran into trouble two weeks ago when he fired his campaign manager for saying Swann is "the rich white guy in this campaign." Scranton is white.

That's good news. He'll make a great governor--maybe not as good as he was as a pass reciever--but he will be much better that what we have.
He's on his way to the end zone!
But better than he was as host of "To Tell the Truth" (for a few months back in 1990-91).
Lynn Swann on Bill Scranton Exiting the Race
"Bill Scranton made a difficult decision today. I applaud him for his leadership, both in the past as Lt. Governor and today as someone with an interest in seeing the Republican Party unified as we move towards our ultimate goal - defeating Ed Rendell. I look forward to working with Bill and his supporters.
Bill's competition for this nomination has contributed a great deal to the debate about making the Commonwealth a better place for all Pennsylvanians. We all agree on one thing, Pennsylvania must do better.
Our current governor thinks Pennsylvania is as good as it can be. I know we can do better, and I look forward to a spirited campaign revolving around the issues important to Pennsylvania families."
Very nice.
While stupid liberals fixate on FAKE Polls, I look forward to seeing detestable lib spawn like Jack Carter lose and many GOP Future Stars like Swann, Steele and Blackwell win.
Absolutely, with victories by Steele, Swann and Blackwell the northeast could be cut off from the rest of the country by black conservatives. What a predicament that would manke for the dems.

He...Could...Go...All...The...Way!
Why the hell didn't he run for the Senate? He could have won the seat in November. I feel Santorum is going to lose handily.
