CAFE is the reason that Ford and GM are building a lot of cars nobody wants to buy

I'm curious about this statement. Why does CAFE make Ford and GM build cars that the American market doesn't want?

Corporate Average Fuel Economy forces a target fleet MPG rating, taking into account all the vehicles the company sells.

Therefore, the dealers' lots are overflowing with uninspiring four door poo boxes and minivans that ignite passion in no one. These vehicles must be heavily discounted and often sold at a loss to satisfy CAFE standards.

Look at the Chevy Cavalier/Celebrity, Ford Focus etc. Drive one of those and then hop in a new Mustang GT and you'll figure out right quickly the strengths and weaknesses of the American auto industry.
