The State of California does indeed maintain a web site which lists
registered sex offenders, per Megan's law.
Thanks for the excellent news.
That's a real improvement over 4-5 years ago. When I was in Southern
California, one of the Los Angeles TV news shows had film of an
"average Joe" that showed up at a local police department to
check up on the register (at that time) and got very feeble response
from the police at the station.
(I'm not bashing the cops...they surely could have had enough on
their hands that day...)

I check the site occasionally to see if there are any registered sex offenders living in our vicinity. I checked it today (for the first time in a long time), mainly to verify the URL for my earlier post. Ever since we moved into our current place, there has been one particular offender (the nearest one) who lived a couple of miles from our dwelling (as the crow flies at least - if the crow had to drive or walk, he would be even further away, and across a freeway). I was nevertheless glad to discover today that he longer appears on the map. I am hoping that is because he moved away.
Since I live in the densely populated Bay Area, there will always be a certain number of offenders living within 3 to 5 miles (straight-line on a map), no matter where one lives. This is probably true of any large city, unfortunately.
