Dying from emphsyma is as bad as it gets. Your lungs can't breath enough oxygen in without assitance. Letting her smoke? I dunno.Might have been more merciful to just put a pillow over her head.

I watched my grandfather die of emphysema. He had quit smoking 15 years previously but, too little, too late.
It was painful and horrible, but he died in at home in his own bed with his wife, son, daughter and grandchildren with him in his final days and hours.

Even if we follow all of the health NAZI's advice we still won't live forever; it will just seem like it. ----

So true.

My father in law died recently of Alzheimer's. It's a dreadful disease. His body was healthy, except his doctor decided his cholesterol was too high, at 186. The doctor prescribed meds for it and ordered Pops to cut his cholesterol intake.
Well, one of his few pleasures left was his daily dish of ice cream. After a month of him sulking, we ditched the cholesterol meds and started serving him ice cream once again. He died of pneumonia 2 years later. So, the doctor would have him miserable for two years for some trivial thing that didn't cause his demise anyway.

You are correct, 100% so.
Ice cream, a gallon a day, if he wanted it, with whipped cream, nuts and a cherry or ten on top.

Bad headline, all I could see were images of a bunch of boys shaving their hands.

I took care of wealthy elderly people in their homes to help me get myself through college.
One woman I helped used to have weekly bridge parties. Four elderly ladies would come over, situate their oxygen tanks, sit down at the card table and smoke until the room was blue.
Used to scare the living daylights out of me. No one was ever hurt, but boy did I smell nasty when I got home every day. Blech.

Hahaha, ya gotta love'em.

A group of elderly women in our parish play bridge every week. They are all in the late 80's. One of them has to take a break every so often to go to her oxygen.

They are ALWAYS forgetting "who dealt last" so....they have a stuffed animal and the dealer sits with the stuffed animal on her lap. So, when the deal comes up, they all know who dealt last. :o)

LOL. That sounds so familiar.

Learned a lot from those women though. The four of them were tough old farming broads. There was just no other way to describe them.

Whew! Your definition of self-abuse and mine are very different.

It wasn't til I got into the story that I realized you were talking about people who cut themselves.

It's all "harm reduction" folks.

Heh. We get a lot of this nonsense. Next thing we'll be giving suicidal people sharper blades.

Why not give these sickos the guns (and bullets) the British police have taken away from law abiding citizens?
