(CBS) LOS ANGELES A brush fire broke out around 3:40 a.m. on Wednesday along the Ronald Reagan Freeway, near the Ventura County line.
As of 4:30a.m., the fire had consumed about one acre of vegetation without damaging any structures or causing any injuries.
That's what they are saying. I have a difficult time believing that but then one of the newscasters quoted a Fire Department official saying one small live ember can be carried four miles with winds like this.

Sure is. And I was just wondering yesterday why the news coverage on the Orange County fire seemed so skimpy. They are on this one.
It's Bush's fault.
It sure is strange. Channel 2 just showed what they seemed to be claiming was the SUV in question. But it's sitting up on top of a very remote area - yup they just said "...very difficult to get to."
This fire sounds awfully dangerous.

Latest: seems that Freeway fire is out, started by a Spider truck flipping over - O.C. fire started by the forest services leaving the scene of a controlled burn before putting it out. Up to 6,500 acres, 10% contained.
The Malbu fire seems to be gaining - no wind yet but it is early and not yet started the day, looks to be pretty bad.

Passive smoking from the fires here today is the word up of the day.
The ash falling everywhere is one thing. It's the microfine particulate ash which you don't see which causes major problems.
It's dust mask time.
Wish you could see the local news. It is not a pretty sight.

The only consolation is that a reporter on KCBS Channel 2 made the claim that there had not been a fire in this particular area since the 1990s.
As I recall this is part of the area which burned in 2003 and there should not be that much re-growth yet.
Well, me too but sometimes I just have to wonder.
Seems nothing was learned from the New Mexico 'controlled burn' that nearly took out Los Alamos Labs.

MALIBU - A brush fire broke out this morning in rough terrain in the Santa Monica Mountains between Calabasas and Malibu and appeared to be spreading rapidly despite the absence of strong pre-dawn winds.
No homes were immediately threatened and there were no immediate injuries, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The blaze broke out in the area of Latigo Canyon Road Newton Canyon Road and was reported to authorities at 4:48 a.m., said Los Angeles County Fire Department Supervising Dispatcher Cheryl Sims. The area is about 3 miles northwest of the Pepperdine campus.
Sims said about 6 a.m. that the blaze had spread to "five or six" acres, but she added that she would not immediately call it "out of control."
Fire officials, who generally prefer carrying out aerial assaults during daylight hours, wasted no time in launching helicopters to make water drops on the blaze.
According to Sims, there were between 50 and 75 firefighters at the scene before sunrise.
The fire broke out and spread even though there were no significant winds. But the winds were expected to pick up after daybreak. A Red Flag Warning, signifying the danger of wildfire because of high winds, low humidity and high heat, was in effect and set to expire only at 4 p.m.
Earlier, a much smaller blaze broke out along the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway near Chatsworth, authorities said.
The fire was reported to authorities around 3:40 a.m. along the westbound side of the freeway, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
As of 4:30 a.m., the fire had consumed about one acre of vegetation without damaging any structures, Humphrey said. No injuries were reported.
Firefighters established lines around the fire, but a containment estimate was not immediately possible, Humphrey said, adding that winds were blowing at about 10 mph in the area.

Thanks NM. During the Ventura County Fire last Autumn we could see what looked just like sunrise, at 10:00 at night in the Western Sky because the flames were at least 30 feet high.
I will wait to see the pictures - my office windows face East and South here in LA so I cannot see smoke - if it is where the last fires were in the mid-90's it could be bad.
I was a volunteer for the Red Cross and was driving one of the food vans throughout the Malbu area during the fire getting water, coffee and food to the firefighters and it was pretty bad.
