WASHINGTON -- Conservative groups urged Congress on Tuesday to end all federal funds to AARP, saying it was wrong for the seniors group to be receiving tens of millions in taxpayer dollars at the same time it was campaigning against administration policies.
"AARP does not have the right to expect taxpayers to foot the bill to help advance its political agenda," said John Carlisle of the National Legal and Policy Center, author of a paper on federal funding to the seniors organization.
David Sloane, senior managing director of government relations at AARP, said the paper was a "sour grapes" response to the coalition's failure to advance President Bush's proposal to privatize Social Security, which AARP opposed.
Sloane said AARP participates in competitive bidding for all federal grants and has shown good results in its federally backed program to find employment for low-income seniors. He said financing for the foundation that runs such programs is totally separated from other AARP activities, including political lobbying.

I will continue to send them bricks on their little "join us" mailouts.
TT
PBS, now AARP--now axing these two from the budget would sure make my YEAR!
My wife asked me about them several years ago.
My response was "AARP is an acronym for Absolute A$$holes Ripping People off.
We used to get their annoying mail, until I finally told them to FOFF!
Yeah, this is the same group that recently honored Scary Belefonte as one of their People of the Year. Cut them off at the knees.
I'm very suprised they receive federal funding. I thought they were a private organization. How silly of me. Now I have even more reason to dislike and distrust them.
Pure Pork
Why should we taxpayers fund a lobbyist organization?
Defund the American Communist Lawyers Union too and all will be right with the world, and the budget.
That's NOTHING next to the hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollar that go to PLANNED PARENTHOOD every signle year. And so-called "pro-life" Bush hasn't cut a signle penny.
I love the acronym. Now I have another one to use. My old one is Anti-American Retired People.
Do you ever read that AAPR magazine they send out? I almost fell to the ground when I got it last month. The front page story was how much in debt our country is in and how it will fall on our childrent to pay it. How dare Aarp complain about this now, now that Seniors account for so much of the budget. It just frosts me.
while their at it they should cut funding to Planned Parenthood too.
I have done the same, and now fume at the thought I have been mailing it back at MY expense (via taxes).
Fed money for AARP too? My goodness, ACLU, PBS and now AARP? It is no wonder we are surrounded by socialists.
AARP can kiss my grits! They will never see a dime of my money!
hahahahaha...
A liberal organization not receiving federal funding!
hahahahahahaha....
Now that's funny!
I love the acronym. Now I have another one to use. My old one is Anti-American Retired People.
As a kid I thought it was for the "retarded" people for years.
