I actually interviewed Lester Maddox as part of a college assignment and he was very nice. While he did make mistakes, he did integrate state government quite a bit. He detested Carter because Jimmah stabbed him in the back years later.
I don't know about Maddox, but even when Alabama's George Wallace was a racist, he got a majority of black votes in every election, I think.
