Most people would not be able to tell a wav recording from a 128kps mp3 one. It is also possible to increase the quality to 192 or 256 kps (mini disc sound quality) and substantially increase sound quality.
It also depends on what you are recording. I happen to be a fan of 1940's and 50's music, both pop and R&R and given a good source disc a duplicate made at 128 is virtually indistinguishable from the original and at 192kps it is definitly indistinguishable.

Depends on how old your ears are, LOL my 50yr old ears can't tell any diffrence......
