How many people in the US thought that the chief bearers of the burden of containing communism worldwide would fall on US shoulders? Smarter people may have, I don't think it had sinked in nationwide though. I think you really have to go back in time to 1945 without 20/20 hindsight.

I made a two part answer. I also said if you read what VP Wallace said from 1940 on, well, just read one of his speeches after WWII to see where some in the Democratic parties heads were at with regards to the USSR. On a scale from left to right in terms of containing communism, obviously Democrats like him were not near the center, but over on the left of the spectrum regarding containment of communism
