I think that Turkey's chances of being admitted to the EU have gone down very considerably in the past few days. Sarkozy has offered some immigration and deportation measures that would have been unthinkable there a year ago. I can't imagine that the murder of an Italian Roman Catholic priest is going to go over well in Italy. The Dutch are unhappy. Undoubtedly many Danes are unhappy. Possible "no" votes are starting to add up.

besides cheap labor, which western europe seems to get anyway, I don't see a single reason for Turkey to become a member of the EU.

Their economy is always in the toilet. Unemployment rate that makes France look good. Lots of tribal sub-human savages living like its the 7th century in the eastern part of the country. Population close to 70 million people. Most who identify more with the middle-east than europe. Government that is moving backwards in democracy and rights of women.
