That was Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe (who I am almost 100 percent CERTAIN is no ancestor of the politically-dearly-departed-chowderhead-former-chairman-of-the-DNC-Terry McAuliffe), acting commander of the 101st Airborne during the Battle of the Bulge, who when faced with a demand from the Germans to surrender, basically told them to pound sand up their ass, i.e., "Ahhh NUTS!"
