Since he supported Alito, he has to now pay back the AFL-CIO and ACLU (his supporters) by banging Bush on this. He tries to play both sides of the fence.

If this is something you couldn't likely get, then how can you say that Congress gave that authority?

Gonzales: In that press conference, I clarified that statement. The consensus was in a meeting that legislation couldn't be obtained without compromising the program.

Specter is doing a FANTASTIC JOB. He is framing the questions in a way that allows them to be answered. He is sucking the oxygen from the Democrats. Gonzales is being set up to respond to Democrats by saying "I addressed that question with Senator Specter".

We don't have to like Specter, but this is his expertise. He knows exactly what he is doing. He is actually protecting Gonzales.
