LIVE THREAD: SJC hearing on the NSA surveilance program - C-span 1; 9:30 am EST

Posted on 02/06/2006 6:08:53 AM PST by ken5050

Good Monday morning, once again, fellow political jinkies. The NFL season may be over, but the political season inside the Beltway is 24/7/365. So join us, if you can, as those wacky Dems on the Senate Judiciary committee reprise their pitiful efforts to once again smear President Bush and score political points..

Agreed. About what a joke these hearings are.

It's simple.

Democrats are using this to fundraise and hope they can damage the President.

"Republicans" like Specter and Linds are using the hearings for the typical power struggle between the branches. The admin is defending it's share of power, Congress wants to grab more power for itself. Nothing new, been the case from the start, but despicable all the same.

Cornyn bats cleanup for admin.

The American people are not outraged by terrorists overseas having their calls monitored if in contact with someone here in the United States. This can only hurt Democrats in national elections.

As much as the Democrats in the Senate would love impeachment hearings on trumped up charges? Impeachment originates in the House. They don't have the power. As much as Specter might cherish the power rush, even if he wouldn't necessarily do it, he doesn't have the power to call for those hearings either.

That means, provided House remains in Rep hands which I have no reason to believe it will not, the Democrats are peddling their wheels uselessly through their hot air.

The ONLY matter to have concern about at this time is Linds...and McCain...and those part of their power grabbing brigade crafting more legislation similiar to the Al Quida Bill of Rights, usurping more power from the Executive Branch and tying their hands further in the WOT.

These hearings will have no impact on their willingness to do this. Only another SCJ opening could stave off that occurrence.

Does anyone think that Gonzalez is saving this line for some appropriate insertion in his testimony, with A cold-eyed stare and stated very seriously and calmly?

"Senator, based on prior AG's investigations, compounded by extensive intelligence agency input, and in light of current worrisome matters presently under investigation .. it has become increasingly clear that this country's security has been compromised by leaks which have emanated from this body." ..... S L A M .............. DUNK!!

No they won't de-fund. But they'll cause real damage through the backdoor. Just as they already have.

She said at the time there was no law for it so then the Constitution Trumps and since there wasn't an AUMF Gorelick broke the law.

Basically. And extending that history to today, Congress might change the law to comport with terrorist surveillance.

That was my question...

SHE wasn't giving sworn testimony...just writing a letter AFTER getting called by a partisan member of Congress.

PUHLEEEZE...Gorelick's letter should be shredded.

UNITED STATES v. CURTISS-WRIGHT EXPORT CORPORATION, 299 U.S. 304 (1936)

The President has his confidential sources of information. He has his agents in the form of diplomatic, consular and other officials. Secrecy in respect of information gathered by them may be highly necessary, and the premature disclosure of it productive of harmful results. Indeed, so clearly is this true that the first President refused to accede to a request to lay before the House of Representatives the instructions, correspondence and documents relating to the negotiation of the Jay Treaty-a refusal the wisdom of which was recognized by the House itself and has never since been doubted.

EBH: Do they not understand this was a top secret program...?
filbert: No. That it precisely what they do not understand.

I respectfully disagree. They know it's secret, but they hate the Bush administration so much that they're willing to sacrifice our security in their pursuit of anything anti-Bush. (So much for representing their constituents.) They're also jealous brats whose egos get bruised if they don't know every secret. I wish one of the interviewees would forego decorum and simply say, "No, we don't tell you everything. We can't, because as soon as we do, it ends up in the media." Senator Roberts, thankfully, said about as much from the other side of the table last week. Spoke of duct taping mouths shut.

It's a shame that our fine military has to go to hell-hole parts of the world, put their lives on the line and fight for the likes of these sorry-a$$ed Democrats

They're doing it to protect ALL of us... even the demonicRATs. The terrorists will kill them as quickly as they'd kill us - they see no difference. That's what the RATs don't get.

I agree with your take on all three...
BUT, wouldn't you consider the FIRST one the most important anyway?

For prosecution of war against terror, it's the only argument that "lasts."
