Demonstrators protesting against caricatures of Islam's Prophet Mohammed set fire to a building housing the Danish mission in Beirut.
Security forces shot tear gas into the crowd and fired their weapons in the air to push the protesters back.
Some 2,000 army troops and riot police were deployed around the embassy building in the district of Ashrafieh, close to Beirut's commercial district.
Unbridled violence
Thousands of demonstrators took part in the protest against publication of caricatures of Islam's revered prophet in European newspapers.
The protest quickly degenerated into violence when groups of Islamic extremists tried to break through the security barrier, prompting troops to fire tear gas and water cannons from fire engines.
The Danish Foreign Ministry urged Danes to leave Lebanon as soon as possible. It had also advised its citizens to leave Syria the day before.
Security officials said at least 30 people were injured, including police, firefighters and protesters.
The violent protest comes a day after thousands of demonstrators in neighbouring Syria set fire to the Danish and Norwegian embassies in Damascus.
Widespread condemnation
Those attacks earned widespread condemnation from European nations and from the US, which accused the Syrian government of backing the protests.
Denmark's Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said he personally disapproves of the caricatures and any attacks on religion.
He however, insisted that he cannot apologise on behalf of his country's independent press.
Media in several European nations and New Zealand recently reprinted the controversial cartoons, calling it an expression of freedom of the press. (With AP inputs)

Somebody needs to do a cartoon with Mohammed bent over, with his burka hiked up exposing his bare butt, pointing to his butt saying, “I got you're 72 virgins right here.”
And then we need to have T-shirts made with this cartoon.
In this pic, OBL looks like that accursed pedophile prophet, Mohammed. Historical fact is that Mohammed was a repulsive, ugly man.

I think a billiuon copies of the cartoons should be printed and plastered on every telephone pole and kiosk across the world. Rather than succumb to this type of intimidtion, we should rub their noses in a constant stream of such cartoons!
