We have the FEMA paperwork, and were planning on contacting them Monday. I was thinking that our senators might find it interesting that we were being charged over $11,000.00 for a couple of small pieces of tarp. I'm just wondering how many people received notices like this.
If this company had sent these out with smaller dollar amounts, how many people do you think would pay it rather than risk losing their house?

KEEP the FEMA paperwork! DO NOT GIVE YOUR COPIES TO ANYONE EXCEPT YOUR ATTORNEY!
Now, that I am done screaming at you to remain in control of any and all paperwork that you received from FEMA. If FEMA or anyone else demands a copy of the paperwork you hold, get certified copies of it and send them the copies.
On Monday, call FEMA and legal services and your Congressman. Tell your Congressman that you are needing some Congressional weight put behind your request that FEMA pay their bills. Ask that his office make a phone call and follow it up with a letter.
The FEMA representative and the Congressional staffer that you talk to, write his/her name down and the time you spoke to him/her for further reference. Keep notes of the conversations.

You mean this bill wasn't for making your roof whole, but putting on some tarps? After Andrew in '92, "roofer" was a curse word. Something's definitely fishy.

I would contact a lawyer and seek an injunction against the lean immediately...some states have weird mechanics leans laws. I don't know the law in Florida, but I do know that stranger things have happened. There are similar laws in Texas that were intended to provide contractors with recourse when home owners unscrupulously refused to pay them. An injunction will give you time to sort everything out with FEMA without having to worry about the threat of a forced sale. There was a case recently here in Houston where a Home Owners association forced the sale of an 86 year old widow's house for something like $1800 in past due association dues.
