Drug cartels cross into deadly territory with cache found in Laredo
SAN ANTONIO Customs investigators seized grenades, pipe bombs and material to make improvised explosive devices twice in the last week in Laredo, federal law enforcement agents said Friday, a sign that the violence among warring drug cartels continues to escalate along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Laredo law enforcement officials called the weapons' discovery which apparently marks the first time such explosives have been found in the city a worrisome development.
"I'm very concerned about explosive devices that would cause major damage or injury," said Laredo Police Chief Agustin Dovalina III. "We're doing our best ... to keep the violence from spreading over to our side, the American side."
Julie Myers, head of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau, said Friday that agents had seized "two improvised explosive devices and ... materials designed to make 33 more."

This entire border situation is a disaster waiting to happen. For God sakes, if you are willing to put troops on the Iraq/Syria border, at least put enough BP agents on the US border.

Mr. President,
Will this be your lasting legacy? IEDs, terrorists, and nuclear suitcases crossing unguarded borders via the Mexican underworld?

My local DFW news had an interview with a visibly shaken Sen Cornyn tonight. I am certain he is thinking like most of us, that it is a matter of time before the Border Patrol has a couple of agents taken out by an IED. If and when that happens, life will not be the same for those Senators that do not support a fence. Cornyn is very worried!

I wonder if this has W's attention yet? Wonder if it is too late? Wonder if an attack is already planned?

By the way, they found two complete IED's and 28 under construction Are we talking about pipe bomb sized, or 155 mm howitzer and/or 500 lb bomb size. All are IEDs, but some are more "improvised" than others.

Wall, now!!! If someone is willing use explosives, a wall ain't going to help much. Boots on the ground (and in the air too) will be the only thing that will work. Also need to set up some pre-surveyed aim points for the arty.

If they blow a hole in the wall it will create a bottle neck for the illegals and drug smugglers.
You can focus on one hole with more resources...
A Rapid reaction force of boarder patrol agents could be more effective in numbers. If not they need to be replaced with National Guardsmen with policing authority. I don't want to give any Defense/Civil Liberties Lawyers any cause they can whine about.

If they blow a hole in the wall it will create a bottle neck for the illegals and drug smugglers. I was thinking somewhat larger than merely one hole, not even one at a time. But you're right, a fence would make the job of those boots easier.

I find it hard to beliee Cornyn, Brownback and the other senators care for anything except cheap labor. They are going to talk tough, and then nix the fence.
