Dem candidates flush with cash, Schwarzenegger's coffers empty

While state Treasurer Phil Angelides and state Controller Steve Westly have raised millions for their Democratic primary for governor, Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's re-election campaign is more than $400,000 in debt.

While Democrats and other Schwarzenegger opponents continue to complain about the millions of dollars last November's special election cost California, the governor may have paid the biggest price. While Schwarzenegger's California Recovery Team was raising and spending more than $45 million in the markedly unsuccessful effort to pass his package of initiatives, the governor's re-election campaign was put on hold.

"Except for one dinner in Los Angeles, everything we did last year went into the special election,'' Wilson said. "We really only began to raise money for the re-election last month.''

Schwarzenegger's opponents spent at least $60 million against the initiatives, the finance reports showed.

Arnold put everything on the line for the reform propositions, but unfortunately the CA voters claiming to want reforms, didn't vote for them.

The last thing the dems and want is for Arnold to be portrayed as anything but a loser.

He has Tom McClintock's full support, and I support Tom.

Excuse me, Arnold did what? Arnold did not promote any of the reforms at all. I think the excuse at the time was he did not have the money......The only communications that was forthcoming was either the union's propaganda or Roger Hedgecock in San Diego. Roger was the only one addressing the issues and we know Arno's referendums passed in San Diego. Arnold had no intentions for the referendums to pass. By doing what he did, he was able to make an excuse to move to the left.

I thought the Dems wanted the "big money" out of politics.

Good to know "big money" is okay if you're doing the work of "the people". I guess that's why most celebrated Communists are rich.

Roger Hedgecock in San Diego. Imagine the impact if everyone in CA had the benefit of Roger's show. He had Arnold and Tom McClintock both pushing the reforms. Tom's ad was wonderful.

Where are you from?

Arnold put everything on the line for the reform propositions, but unfortunately the CA voters claiming to want reforms, didn't vote for them.

What he put on the line is arguable. Regardless, his 2006 Campaign bucket is empty. The bucket not for reforms, but for reelection. He's gone through $3 million bucks and the the campaign hasn't even started.

Looking at the filings, it says he spent about $450K of it on "campaign consultants", much of it supplementing the State salaries of his staff ($25 grand to Susan Kennedy, $80K to Stutzman, $60K to Clarey). And $75,000 to New Majority Renee Croce, "campaign consultant" (plus another $9K in expenses). And another $53,000 for Dieter Rauter--"Campaign consultant"? This guy was Arnold's stunt double!

Bump!

McClintock letter:

< snip >

"That's why, when I hear rumors that some delegates are planning to use the upcoming Republican Party convention to attack the Governor and his proposals, all I can do is shake my head.

Like many of us, I too have disagreements with some of the Governor's proposals. These differences, however, do not justify the abandonment of our party's responsibility to work tirelessly to reelect this Republican governor and to elect our GOP candidates to statewide and legislative offices.

For this reason, I view any effort to attack Governor Schwarzenegger as an attack on my own candidacy and those of every Republican seeking partisan office in 2006. "
