Might have its origins from the Hakka people as well. They're still pretty light, and were widesperad throughout the Japanese islands long before the Ya-Yoi arrived there after the fall of the Shang dynasty.

Then, too, as Shishedo demonstrated, coming up with cosmetics for Asian women is a different matter than scooping up red-clay, the common technique in the West.
