The ignorance of Freepers on Louisiana questions is again on display.
"I think every city that is built below sea level should probably become extinct."
Given the nature of water, that's going to happen with our without our help, eventually. But, there are cities that have survived centuries in just such a precarious situation. These cities apparently don't have to contend with hurricanes, though.
Venice shoud be preserved because it has architectural masterpieces unmatched in all the World. But the tract housing in the New Orleans basin was dime-a-dozen shacks, such as can be found in every city in the United States. There is simply no reason that what was being done there could not be done more safely and much cheaper almost anywhere else.
There is simply no reason to put it back.
My liberal NYC sister:
"It's going to be under water by 2100! Don't rebuild any of New Orleans or spend one taxpayer penny on it!"
Me:
"It's going to be under water by 2080 - twenty years earlier! And any hurricane this season could destroy it again!"
My liberal NYC sister:
"Forget New Orleans! - It's is sinking faster every year and they blew money on fountains and graft and bribes and welfare! Build a new city above sea level somewhere else!"
Me:
"I agree!"
My liberal NYC sister:
"This is not only crazy and theft of my taxes dollars but is environmentally insane!"
Me:
"You call yourself a liberal democrat but don't think or act like on! Why do you vote for democrats!"
My liberal NYC sister:
"Because.....
why? many cities are built below sea level and have no problems whatsoever. NO had a larger problem of sitting between a lake and a gulf, in a hurricaine zone.
So you want to damage the Israeli economy, and destroy much of the Netherlands? Any other groups you don't like?
I don't want to sound mean, and I've been through the amazing Hugo, but New Orleans is the blueprint for the paradise that can come about without God, the secular progressive worker's paradise. These monstrous schemes always fail soon or late. The hurricane just hastened the inevitable. That said, I wish no malice to those who have been battered by the forces of nature. A new attitude, along with reinforced levees, may help the city to revive. The culture of envy must end.
