Yeah, offing people's no big deal, but when they start kicking puppies, that's when you know they're bad guys!
I think it's because when people get killed in the drug trade, most times they're involved and culpable for their own choices to be in harm's way. A puppy is innocent and harmless, unable to defend itself.
