Conservatives Disappointed with Bush 'State of the Union' Speech
The National Ledger ^ | 2-2-06 | Robert Novak

WASHINGTON -- While jumping up on cue to cheer during the speech and delivering rave reviews afterward in the Capitol's Statuary Hall, conservative members of Congress were deeply disappointed by George W. Bush Tuesday night. It was not merely that the president abandoned past domestic goals. He appeared to be moving toward bigger government.

The consensus on the Right was that President Bush's fifth State of the Union Address was his worst. Republican congressmen agreed privately that he was most effective at the beginning with his familiar message of why U.S. forces cannot abandon Iraq. The problem for these lawmakers was the rest of the 51-minute presentation, which was filled with unpleasant surprises.

Hafta say I agree. Most of what I heard was about government programs, need to help the poor, blah, blah. 2 choices today, socialism or socialism-lite.

I say we go ahead for socialism and make this ship capsize. Trying to bail water isn't doing any good anymore when the Republicans backstab conservatives over and over and over and over and over.

Well, I would have been happier if he'd just wrapped it up after he gave the Iranian people the hint it was time to run the mullahs out of town, but I wasn't disappointed.

I am curious who the conservatives are who he talked to that were disappointed.

According to FR poll the greatest conservative forum on the planet, 51% rate the President State of the Union Address as excellent, 30% rate it as good, and 9% as fair. I do not see "conservative" disappointment here unless the Buchananites, Constitution party, and libertarians are who Robert Novak is talking about, but those guys are an tiny tiny fringe group and they are " ISOLATIONASITS", of course they will not like it.

No he's not. I wasn't thrilled about his domestic agenda either. He definately is no Ronald Reagan. I would oppose some of that domestic agenda. We made a big mistake not opposing more vigorously that new huge drug program entitlement he shoved down our throat. No more!

Buchananites, Bill Kristol, and some other tiny fringe groups that claim conservatism, but not the vast majority of conservatives.

The minute you walked in the joint
I could see you were a man of distinction, a real big spender
Good looking, so refined
Say, wouldn't you like to know what's going on in my mind?
So let me get right to the point
I don't pop my cork for every man I see
Hey big spender!
Spend a little time with me

Wouldn't you like to have fun, fun, fun?
How's about a few laughs, laughs?
I could show you a good time
Let me show you a good time

The minute you walked in the joint
I could see you were a man of distinction, a real big spender
Good looking, so refined
Say, wouldn't you like to know what's going on in my mind?
So let me get right to the point
I don't pop my cork for every man I see
Hey big spender!
Hey big spender!
Hey big spender!
Spend a little time with me
Yes

Yeah, I guess it just as I anticipated. He had nothing to excite us about...hint hint (move to abolish IRS, border security, slashing of useless federal agencies). Who am I kidding? These are just wet dreams.

Bush can`t win. The Rats hate him and the so called conservatives stick knives in his back. What do you real conservatives want? A complete dismantling of the government?
I know your answer and part of it will be that you would rather lose elections then continue down the path of doom and destruction Guess what? When we lose, Rats win. When you don`t vote, rats win. When Rats win, we ALL lose If you want to really change things, become active in GOP politics. Get off the sidelines and work within the Party and help us make changes. Or, you can always stay on the outside, and be happy telling everybody there is no force that can make the country better.

I did not say it was perfect. Geo. W. has done quite a number of things that I was not happy with. He tries much to hard 'to get along' with Demorats for one, prescription drug plan for another. Hopefully he will make some changes. He is certainly better than the alternative, Kerry.

Just take a chill pill and you'll get over yourself.

All you have to do is win the presidency and then you can show the world how to give a speech that will live up to your expectations of how somebody ought to please you.

Meanwhile, it doesn't seem to matter if one is a conservative or a liberal -- in coming down with those nasty delusions of grandeur, people working in the old media are afflicted with. Why can't you people learn to appreciate things for what they are -- instead of always trying to distort them into what you think they ought to be. It's a big world buddy. Learn to live with it.

The reason we don't all write you about how you ought to write a column to please us, is that we have more important and enjoyable things to do than to run your life. That's what freedom of expression is all about -- even for presidents.

I think Mr. Novak meant that "well-informed, sophisticated and influential conservatives" disliked Bush's speech.
Whether it's popular on FReep or not is, frankly, beside the point, because we are mostly just isolated kibitzers who often don't see anything like the big picture.

The domestic side of Bush's speech was largely lacking in conservative vision and equally lacking in conservative rhetoric. He seems incapable of bashing the Democrats straightforwardly. Instead, he uses useless words like "some," "those who," "politicians," etc. that spread the blame both too narrowly and too widely.

While the energy and competitiveness programs may or may not make sense, the only serious conservative content in this speech was on foreign policy. And even there, in addition to not blaming the Rats squarely and unambiguously, Bush also wasn't tough on Hamas or nearly tough enough on Iran.
