Conservatives Disappointed with Bush 'State of the Union' Speech
The National Ledger ^ | 2-2-06 | Robert Novak

Posted on 02/01/2006 9:51:00 PM PST by Coastal

WASHINGTON -- While jumping up on cue to cheer during the speech and delivering rave reviews afterward in the Capitol's Statuary Hall, conservative members of Congress were deeply disappointed by George W. Bush Tuesday night. It was not merely that the president abandoned past domestic goals. He appeared to be moving toward bigger government.

The consensus on the Right was that President Bush's fifth State of the Union Address was his worst. Republican congressmen agreed privately that he was most effective at the beginning with his familiar message of why U.S. forces cannot abandon Iraq. The problem for these lawmakers was the rest of the 51-minute presentation, which was filled with unpleasant surprises.

You're winning the war of ideas, but NOT elections!

Shows what little impact he and those like him have.

Right, and you remain bitter. Bitter to the end.

Yeah, right.

>>>>Unlike you, though I worked extremely hard and donated a lot of money...

Once again, you make comments that have no basis in fact. I worked extremely hard for the GOP and have I donated money for years. This year the GOP can KMA!

>>>>Reagan talked about abortion and actually did almost nothing else.

Look, if you want to lie, go for it. I gave you a list of Reagan's pro-life accomplishments. You ignored it. Aside from PBA, you've offered nothing on Bush. Reagan talked the talk and walked the walk when it came to pro-life issues. I think both Reagan and Bush are strong pro-lifers. Why you're bashing Reagan without any substative facts to back up your rhetoric is bizarre behavior on your part.

>>>>O'Conner was an AFFIRMATIVE ACTION pick and a way to be a "first" in history books.

So what! In the 1980 campaign Reagan said he would appoint a woman to the USSC. He kept his promise.

>>>>You don't ever give president Bush good marks for much and then ALWAYS drag in Reagan. That, in turn, forces people, like me, who supported Reagan, to have to poke you in the eye with his faults. That really is not only a waste of time, but never proves your contemptuous posts about President Bush. Give it a rest................

You need to get your facts straight. I didn't drag Reagan into anything. I was asked about the Reagan record. And I answered. I gave Bush credit for what he's done right. When Bush is wrong, I spell it out. That drives you Bush sycophants crazy. Yeah, you go around poking people in the eye, with lies and obfuscation.

You want to debate the facts, bring it on. You want to lie, hit the road.

By the way, your memory was correct. That phrase was not in use around here way back then.

Yes, it was.

You were right to call them on it.

THEM??? THEM? THE AWFUL THEM??????

We just came on over here to mess with you and RM because it didn't take us that long to dispell the "9-11 World Trade Towers Weren't Hit by Planes" thread.

Oh well, I'm sure you'll find a 'doesn't George look nice today' thread once the excitement dies down here...

We're going to have to find the courage one of these days to tell people that freedom is not an easy discipline.

The voters have decided it is easier to ignore Keyes.

I'm NOT a "party pooper" at all! You just aren't worth the bother

I agree, I am not worthy. But you are not bringing joy to the party.

So why are you now willing to believe onyx, but not me? Howlin said that I was right too!

I believe you all, I do. It's just that my "style" includes being able to see and cite to hard evidence. You take my "I don't belive you" all too literally, as it was menat only to goad you to find a cite. ANd I think the goad was a reasonable one, because of all the posters, you assert, nay, EXUDE, the most certainty.

And since you claim to remember the Cal. Gov. race threads and the flame wars thereon, why is it that you can't remember that the Donner Party Conservative term was used, repeatedly, in them?

It's that short term, long term memory problem of mine. I have a vague recollection of tons of fun, but the details are not in my grasp. I need your help.

Could it be, that I am correct and all you yearn for, with every fiber of your being, is a stupid flame war with me?

It could be, but it isn't. Flame wars with nopardons are never stupid. Plus, I'd like a more definite handle on that early use of "Donner Party Conservative."

Illegal immigration. Do you want it put to an end? A majority of Americans do, and with just cause IMO. How long will we wait for an administration to say enough is enough. No more. 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020? And how many more will get into our country illegally and siphon off the earnings of working Americans, until one of these federal administrations does what it should have been doing all along.

Bush cannot be excused on the basis of what previous administrations have not accomplished in this area.

I am a long-time registered Republican but I will not, cannot, blindly follow the party line when I disagree with it.

Yeah, right.

Stop palin' around with unhinged bozo's like Keyes and Randall Terry, and you might be taken a little bit more seriously.
