Conservatives Disappointed with Bush 'State of the Union' Speech
The National Ledger ^ | 2-2-06 | Robert Novak

Posted on 02/01/2006 9:51:00 PM PST by Coastal

WASHINGTON -- While jumping up on cue to cheer during the speech and delivering rave reviews afterward in the Capitol's Statuary Hall, conservative members of Congress were deeply disappointed by George W. Bush Tuesday night. It was not merely that the president abandoned past domestic goals. He appeared to be moving toward bigger government.

The consensus on the Right was that President Bush's fifth State of the Union Address was his worst. Republican congressmen agreed privately that he was most effective at the beginning with his familiar message of why U.S. forces cannot abandon Iraq. The problem for these lawmakers was the rest of the 51-minute presentation, which was filled with unpleasant surprises.

Reagan never rasied income taxes. His four picks to the USSC were O'Conner, Scalia, Rehnquist to Chief and Kennedy. The latter only after the Senate voted Robert Bork down. Two conservatives, one moderate conservative and one moderate. Good record. Alito will be a good justice. Roberts is a big question mark.

There was no issue with PBA during the Reagan years. Aside from PBA, Reagan did about as much as Bush has done on the abortion issue. Maybe more. Reagan was the first POTUS to address the Right to LIfe March on WashDC, on the anniversary of Roe v Wade. PresReagan did many things to support pro-life causes and his rhetoric was unsurpassed on the subject matter. Reagan wrote "Abortion and the Conscience of a Nation" while in office. The first published book by a sitting POTUS. You should read it.

* He supported legislation that would allow for a challenge of Roe vs. Wade.

* He adopted the "Mexico City Policy" halting federal aid to private groups promoting abortions abroad.

* His administration cut off funding to the United Nations Fund for Population Activities because the global agency violated U.S. law by participating in China's mandatory abortion program.

* His administration adopted regulations prohibiting federally funded "family planning clinics" from promoting abortion as birth control.

* The Reagan White House blocked use of federal money for research using the tissue of aborted babies.

* It helped win approval of the "Danforth Amendment," which said federally funded educational institutions could not be guilty of "sex discrimination" for refusing to pay for abortions.

* Reagan himself introduced the issue of fetal pain into the public debate over abortion.

* His administration was key in enactment of laws protecting the right to life of handicapped newborns.

* Reagan designated a National Sanctity of Human Life Day, to recognize the value of life at all stages.

Granted, the IRCA of 1986 didn't turn out to be the one time amnesty deal is was meant to be. But if the administrations of Bush41, Clinton and Bush 43 had enforced that law, we wouldn't have the 10-15 million illegals in the US today.

No need to take cheap shots at Reagan. Here is the historical truth about the Beirut Marine barracks bombing.

The US Marines were part of a multinational peackeeping force, that was thrown into the middle of a civil war in Beruit Lebanon. After the Marine barracks was car bombed, US intelligence was not able to positively determine who committed the action. Some experts in the US govt believed the responsibile party was Hezbollah, with help from either Syria or Iran. Islamic Jihad actually took credit for the bombing. But no final conclusion was ever reached by the our government.

The Reagan administration hatched a plan to knock off a military barracks of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Defense Secretary Cap Weinberger opposed such an action. Weinburger told Reagan, any attack without positive proof of who committed the Beirut action would lead to an expanded civil war, dragging the US further into the conflict and undermining Reagan's efforts in the Cold War. Reagan took Weinberger's advice.

Until this day, Weinberger insists the blame for who committed the Marine barracks bombing is unknown. Reagan did order air bombing and shelling from the USS New Jersey. Soon afterwards, the Marines were pulled out for good. All in all, a smart move. Reagan knew that Lebanon was an untenable situation. Besides, Reagan had bigger fish to fry.

It's easy for you and others to be able to look back with 20/20 hindsight and say Reagan was negligent for his lack of action. Fact is, if Reagan was given proof who committed the killing of the Marines, he would have taken stronger military action then he did.

Did the Marine barracks bombing add to rise of Islamic fundamentalism in the ME, sure. It was a contribuing factor, but it was not the cause.

>>>>And this is just for starters. :-)

Bring it on.

Get one of those cute little minature mice ( USB attachment ) for that laptop....I can't imagine how you can get anything done without a moussey!

Those are pretty cool. A lady I help with computer problems in town had bought a laptop on ebay for $50 and a generic brand USB optical mouse for $9. It was small and compact, and was actually made for use on a laptop.

You SAID that I gave deport the credit.

Your short term memory is getting worse by the minute. It's little wonder that you doubt my memory, because obviously, since YOU stated that your long term memory is worse than your short term memory, you can't believe that anyone else has a very good memory. LOL

Backpedaling is silly. You've not mentioned, until now, that deport is in the link. And you most assuredly did post to me, in such an accusatory way, that I made the claim! Your shucking and jiving, now, isn't doing you nor your cause any good at all.

And it is precisely because you demanded that I MUST link, even when I repeatedly explained to you, in the simplest words possible, that I am incapable of complying with your demands, that I do not trust you at all. You could have made the gesture, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back up this thread, of accepting a thread title. You did no such thing; until now.

Howlin has corroborated my statement.

Good do your own scut work. Prove me wrong and then gloat; or be completely shamed. Frankly, I couldn't care less what you think or say. All you want is to hector me. And all I'm doing, now, is laughing at you. :-)

If you and your ilk succeed at purging the Phyllis Schlafleys from the GOP, all you'll have left is the Dem-Lite Party.

What an accomplishment...

You don't like the drug program entitlement. Why? I'm sincerely interested in your reason. If you're not of age to "benefit" from it, does that influence your decision? If you are AND use a number of expensive medications, and have no company drug plan, what do you suggest for those in the same boat?

I recently reached the Medicare age but have not signed up for it's drug plan. It would be interesting to know the statistics on what percentage of eligible people HAVE taken advantage of the plan.

On TV just tonight, we were warned against buying drugs from Canada. We don't know where they originate and they may be unsafe. That may be so but I could not help wondering if that translates into: sign up for the Medicare Drug Program. Beside the fact that it is a typically complicated gov't program, the costs will be astronomical. And current workers will pay much of it, at the same time not knowing if Medicare will be available to them when they reach that age.

Guess you missed him asking for the line item veto.

Congress SPENDS, not the president. Nice try.

I just wanted to let you know that I noticed that not one measly appeasable has replied to your slam-dunk post. Very good.

Do "I" need lessons?

Your posts are in the course "Mild Challenges - 250"

Not bad, a mid-level course. I don't even register a look-see with the bastards.

I suppose so, but all of these bells and whistles are really wasted, with me using this thing. LOL

I sort of have a mental block about learning how to do anything more with it, than I do now. Just be thankful that my s-i-l managed to teach me how to make paragraphs! Remember when I could do even that?

Maybe it would be more believable if he knew what a 'veto' was...
