Or maybe he will emerge as an opponent of capital punishment. After all, wasn't the implicit notion that he would rule according to his Catholic faith thought to be a positive? The Roman Catholic Church is adamantly opposed to capital punishment.

Roberts, Scalia, and Thomas are all practicing Catholic so your dumb argument that the Alito Catholicism has effected his judgment on this case is absolutely wrong. The man has been on the court for few hours and he just needed more time to hear the case before ordering the execution of a man, it is a simple as that.

He likely had a heads up on this case as he has been a nominee for months. No excuses for first day on the job.

Sorry, no sale. I have a funny feeling that Alito may have been a tad.... distracted.... during the past three months.

You are making a dumb conclusion with absolutely no proof what so ever.

No he did not have to worry about preparing himself to face the democrat inquisition in the Senate, he just said let me read the cases in front of the US supreme court and make a "preliminary" judgment on it. Of course I am being sarcastic here and I agree with your post.

Quite to the contrary, you are making a dumb conclusion with absolutely no proof whatsoever. I haven't made any conclusion at all.

Your dumb as a rock conclusion is as follows: Three practicing Catholics uphold capital punishment, and so a fourth practicing Catholic will not let his Catholicism influence his judgment with regard to capital punishment.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

My only remark was that: maybe he will emerge as an opponent of capital punishment, and if he did that would be consistent with his Roman Catholic faith (whether or not due to that reason), which was held by many to be a positive factor.

PS. And it's worth noting that I oppose capital punishment, so it would hardly upset me if Alito were to emerge as an opponent of the death penalty. My views on both abortion and the death penalty are almost entirely consistent with the Catholic Church, more so than that of many American Catholics, and I'm not merely a lapsed Catholic, I'm a collapsed Catholic. LOL

Alito siding against conservatives

Since when is execution a conservative virtue? Be pro-life in ALL respects. If someone's in jail for the rest of their life, that should be good enough. You don't have to kill him. It puts you on their level.

What's most interesting about that picture is that Mrs. Alito is definitely thinking "If only Mary Jo Kopechne could be here now..." I have no idea if this is true, but you just KNOW that's what she's thinking...

Tinfoil hat secure, chief!

Idiocy on parade.

Press idiocy.

And they suck in a lot of non-critical thinkers with such a 'catchy' title like that too.

I command you and respect you for adhering to the Catholic Church teaching on both abortion and capital punishment. I for one oppose abortion and condone capital punishment, there is no need for murders to live.

>>>Those of us who supported this guy did so because we trusted his judgement.<<<

Bingo - you captured the essence of his decision. Absolutely the right one given the fact he has not had the opportunity to review the case.....or even get the pencils arranged in the center drawer of his desk.

Judge Alito will be fine. Those who demand him to be a "hanging judge" day one do not understand the importance of "deliberation" to the Supreme Court.

Too bad it was'nt Teddy Kennedy under appeal. I do believe Alito would have gone with the minority!

Actually, I don't believe this tells us anything about Alito.

It should upset you if you're a consistent conservative. The Constitution clearly provides for capital punishment. Any decision to the contrary -- whether based on changing societal values, norms of international law or religious beliefs -- simply constitutes a justice substituting his view of what constitutes "good" for the clear guidance of our adopted Constitution. If a justice wants to say the death penalty is unconstitutional, he should have run for elective office.

I don't trust the medias interpretation of anything a conservative does. Period. The reporters don't understand the underlying legal or political issues usually and are always trying to frame the story to make it look like a problem for the GOP regardless of whether it makes sense or not. And I don't believe quotes of Republicans unless I see them myself.
