Isn't the Glock 37 in .45GAP?

The military would have to transition to a completely new cartridge that isn't compatible with the 1911s & MK23s already in service.

Pat Rogers is the guy to ask about this article...he's personally involved in the procurement process for the firearms in question.

Any way, I would love to be able to purchase a nice 1911 pattern pistol, the price though is relatively high for someone without a lot of disposable income...

A 9mm (or, as I like to think of it, .380 Long) sidearm seems like a good idea in peace time, and makes sense to logistical types.

It isn't such a hot idea when you need to use it. In fact, a .45 is a poor substitute for something larger, like an airstrike, but it's better than a 9mm.

Knock down..

I guess "for every action and equal and opposite reaction" is junk science?

What grain bullet did the author use in his evaluation? .45s go from 180 grains [ same as a .40] up to 230 grains [known as the "flying ash tray]. Did he use FMJs or hollow points? For a highly technical article, that's an important area to omit.

I always thought of the pistol as a badge of office, rather than a real weapon. Even though it was much more useful and compact than the saber it replaced, I never carried one in combat. Things have really gotten desperate if you actually have to use one.

The M1911A1 felt better in my hand, I got more rounds on target with the M9 - probably because they were less worn. Otherwise, I remain indifferent.

My Great Grandpappy hit a yankee on the pinky finger at Chancellorsville. There was nothing left but hair and hide.

That was using a cornstalk. No telling how much damage he could have done with a gun.

90 years of experience demonstrated that you should not depend on a pistol in the heat of combat

A buddy of mine who used to be in Special Forces in Viet Nam told me once "If you're down to fighting with handguns, you're in deep sh!t." Hard to argue with him on that point.

I'm surprised nobody jumped on this glaring error by the author:

"From this experience, the then standard army pistol, a .38 caliber (9.65mm) weapon, was replaced by a .45 caliber (11.4mm) one.

Who can tell us what the big boo-boo is in that sentence?

Thank the good lord that they brought this old workhorse back. Now if they will just bring back the BAR or a good replacement for it, I would be even happier. Large caliber heavy hitting rounds make a hell of alot more sense than these "metrosexual bullets" we seem to issue our troops these days.

I probably wont be popular for saying this but here goes.

From '87 to '91 I was an armorer in the Marine Corps. I was stationed on Okinawa during the transition from the 1911A1 to the M9. Range time with the .45 was a constant fight to keep the shooters in action, with most of the guns malfunctioning at least some of the time. This changed with the introduction of the Beretta. I personally witnessed at least a million rounds go through the M9 with exactly one failure, and that was with a round so malformed that no pistol could chamber it. Granted, the .45s were old, the newest being made in 1945, but they weren't worn out. Anyone who has put alot (10,000 rnds +) through a 1911 knows that the low pressure .45 ACP round doesn't really stress the gun.

Fast forward. In 2000 I really began shooting pistol in earnest. That year I fired a little over 5000 rounds in practice and competition and saw the exact same thing. Shooters with 1911s (myself included) fought with failure rates that made winning very difficult if the competition was armed with more modern pistols. I continued with the .45, convinced that if one wants to shoot a real gun it has to be a 1911 of some kind. Last year I finally gave in and bought a Glock. I now have 6445 documented rounds through this pistol with zero failures. I never came close to that kind of reliability with 1911s and I have become convinced that if someone tells me they have a 100% reliable 1911, either they don't really shoot it or they are lying to me. After hearing my whole life that the 1911 is THE handgun to be armed with it was hard to give them up but reality is hard to overcome. I still own and shoot 3 different 1911's but I don't compete with or carry them anymore. Flame on..
