DETROIT - The city embraced its hometown Super Bowl heroes on Tuesday, even presenting Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jerome Bettis with a key to the city.

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and the City Council gave the ceremonial key to Bettis at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center and declared this week "Jerome Bettis Week."

"Jerome is a shining example of what a kid with a dream from Detroit can accomplish with hard work and determination," Kilpatrick said in a statement. "He has carried his Detroit pride at every level of his career, always looking to give back to the city that gave him so much."

Bettis is the fourth person in Detroit's history to receive a key to the city, Kilpatrick said.

I noticed Jerome Bettis was getting a key to the city (Detroit) this week. Pretty good, huh? On second glance, it is Detroit after all. The city that has gradually evolved into the American symbol for crime, poverty, police/political corruption, poor educational systems and an overall cultural drab.

Isn't this the city that has only given four other "keys of honor"? The others? I know of three ...

- Jerome Bettis - Louis Farrakhan & .... Sadaam Hussein!

Then again, what would you expect from a city that has a nickname like "New Fallujah".

Source?

I realize that there's a lot of Detroit-bashing this week from whiny sportwriters who don't like 30-degree temperatures, but this is a new one . . .

I hear Detroit is referred to as "New Fallujah".

Didn't realize Fallujah was that dangerous.

Yeah, I'd like a source. Besides, I've never heard anything bad about Bettis, what's wrong with him being honored by his hometown?

Boy... it's sure nice of Detroit to supply a neutral venue for the Superbowl.

Don't worry, given the price of scalped tickets there will be very few locals there. But you shouldn't be surprised that people are proud of Bettis, who's a class act who's stayed loyal to his hometown.

Detroit bashing? lol

Is the information not true? What's not to bash?

It's all documented anyway (although a different issue)- mayoral corruption, city council corruption, police corruption, violent and non-violent crime rates, low wage earnings, poor educational scores, loss of jobs, population loss, gansta rap, gangs, unions, etc

It used to be a great city! Now it's primarily known for mostly negative events ...

Thanks for the links. Considering I had Iraqi NCO's in my classes at Keesler AFB 20 years ago I'm not surprised that Saddam was more popular back then. Funny how things change.
