ABC NOW FEARING A MASS TUNEOUT (The Brokeback Oscars Effect)
NY Post ^ | 2/1/06 | DON KAPLAN

"Brokeback Mountain" and a slew of other arty, less-widely seen Oscar-nominated flicks are expected to take the polish off ABC's ratings for the Academy Awards this year.

With no big-budget films like "Titanic," "Gladiator" or "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" in this season's crop of nominees, ABC may be staring down the barrel of one of the lowest-rated Oscar telecasts in recent memory when it airs on March 5, say TV-industry analysts.

That about sums up 3hrs of the Oscars.....

The 1997 Oscars was the longest on record at 3 hours and 37 minutes, but I believe Hollywood even exceeded that two years ago.

I wouldn't spend 3 hours and 37 minutes with Whoopie Goldberg unless I was being paid $500 an hour, and even then, I'd balk.

Aren't they having a "Life of Snails" documentary on the Discovery channel that night?

Works for me!

You are absolutely right. The "You like me, you really LIKE me!" phrase has been repeated so much, it resonates in my mind as the original.

I can't even remember what Sally Field did to win that Oscar - but knowing Hollywood, it was probably "The Lesbian/Trans-gendered Flying Nun" or something.

I know I will be participating in the Great American Tuneout of 2006. Just like every one of the last ten years.

I agree with you on all counts. I hope that he and Reese gets one. They both deserve it and both seem like descent people.

My cousin went to college with Jonathan Leibowitz (he changed his last name to Stewart. His nickname in college was "Lefty." I don't think that referred to his political views (but who knows).

His official Bio says he is 5'7", but my cousin (who is 6'3") says Stewart is more like 5'5".

That is why he likes to stay always seated on his show.

14 8 End of the Spear RM $2,517,811 -41.2% 1,097 -66 $2,295 $7,919,278 $10 2

It is a shame that End of the Spear has only made 7.9 million in two weeks after a budget of 10 million because conservatives can't get out to the movies to see it. This is one reason why Hollywood refuses to make Christian movies.

Places in the Heart is a 1984 film which tells the story of a Southern widow who tries to keep her farm together with the help of a blind man and an African-American man. It stars Sally Field, Lindsay Crouse, Ed Harris, Amy Madigan, John Malkovich and Danny Glover.

The movie was written and directed by Robert Benton, and filmed in the Dallas, Texas area.

It won Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Sally Field) and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. It was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (John Malkovich), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Lindsay Crouse), Best Costume Design, Best Director and Best Picture.

When Sally Field reached the podium to accept her Oscar, her second (the first was for Norma Rae), she uttered the memorable, much-mocked line, "You like me! You really like me!"

Here's all that Fox has to do...put on John Wayne in Red River, with only one 2-minute commerical break in the middle. It would likely carry at least the same audience as watching the Oscars...if not more. For ABC...the money from commericals would likely be dismal and some advertisers might ask for their money back. Fox could send a quiet message...real cowboys are preferred over breakback...and the hollywood crowd would be sitting there and scratching its head for months.

"The good news just keeps on coming. ;-)"

Of course Clooney, Spielberg et al will interpret it as how stupidity is spreading across the nation.

Never would they realize that it is they who are the misguided ones.

They are, after all, the enlightened seeking to free us from the narrow mindedness that binds us and keeps us from experiencing true freedom. They seek to lead us out of darkness.

Typical blind liberal elitism. They will never be humble enough to recognize how out of touch with reality they truly are.

It did fine at first, until they found out the lead actor was gay. Then they dropped it like a hot potato.

ABC should be required to give parental warnings before the start of the show and upon the return from each commercial break. Homosexual content is NOT a subject for children.

In fact where is the Family Council and other family groups? They should be demanding the oscars be encoded with a "MA" for sexual content so parents can be assured it will be V-Chip blocked.

I guarantee no straight man will be around the water cooler discussing the oscars after it airs.

IOW ABC is screwed. But then as a Disney company they probably enjoyed it.

How about an award to compete against the Oscars aired at the same time?
