In listening to the very sane Democrat Ben Nelson tonight, I finally realized the reason for the decline of the Democrats. Ben Nelson is a legislator and a statesmen but his fellow Dems are politicians only.

Before 1974, there were at least 25 Nelsons in the Senate. Then the "progressives" took over the party.
