SACRAMENTO (AP) - Former U.S. Treasurer Rosario Marin was appointed Tuesday by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to head the State and Consumer Services Agency.
Marin was appointed treasurer by President Bush in 2001 and served until May 2003, when she resigned to return to California. She lost a Republican primary race for the U.S. Senate in 2004. Since then, she has been a member and chair of the state's Integrated Waste Management Board.
"Rosario's decades of experience serving and representing the people of California at the federal, state and local levels have given her a unique understanding of the important ways in which government is accountable and must be responsive to the people it serves," Schwarzenegger said in announcing the appointment.
The agency is responsible for civil rights enforcement, consumer protection and the licensing of 2.3 million Californians in more than 230 different professions. It also buys more then $4 billion worth of goods and services, manages state real estate, oversees two state employee pension funds, collects state taxes, hires state employees, adopts state building standards, and runs two state museums, the California Science Center and the California African American Museum.
Marin, 47, a Republican, was a member of the city council and mayor of Huntington Park from 1994 to 2001, and still lives in that city. Under former Gov. Pete Wilson, she was deputy director of the Gov.'s Office of Community Relations from 1997 to 1998. She was assistant deputy director of the Department of Social Services in 1997, chair of the Council on Developmental Disabilities from 1994 to 1997, and chief of legislative affairs at the Department of Developmental Services from 1992 to 1993.
This position requires Senate confirmation and pays $131,412.

She's a RINO and an empty skirt... but other than that, a fantastic pick.
Sends the correct message to Mexico's poor. If you come we will welcome you, overlook your small indiscretions, and put you on our government payroll at the highest levels.
