Personally I was flabbergasted that a son would say something like that on a public airway. Nobody touched the statement so there was no followup to expand on the bomb that had been laid on the table.
I suppose there is a chance he was pulling his father's chain in some sort of private gotcha joke exchange, but it sounded pretty straight.

It doesn't seem like something one should say on national TV..........even if joking.
And if the viewer can't TELL that you're joking, it's even worse.
